OP is missing the threshing part, but the workers dont recgonize that the import crop is in the Trading post, so workers on the farm never use it.
You can turn off the importing said crop, waiting for a month to tick, and sometimes that fixes it temporarily. Or just reloading a save over and over.
if u start with poor soil but with animal 40 (u need to spend 2 tech points on animal + manor policy that speed up ur animal reproduction rate, so meat egg veggie is ur main food source, but beware u might still need to import some meat, this route isnt very good, since u still need to farm barley for beer and that policy cuts down poor barley production in half)
plus if u have to purchase meat that means 2 tech points into trade. leaves u 2 tech points , most likely u gonna need heavy plow and helmet which means this is very hard run.
the easier run would be fertile soil + berry (berry 248+ egg kingdom + veggie )
if u want iron mine bonus its most likely gonna be poor soil, iron mine + berry is very good start region for heavily armored troop
