you don't need clothing to build your manor

Better to spend money on a trade route if having something to sell as that will create some income. Otherwise you'll have to wait for ages for the level 2 and level 3 buildings create enough income, at least at the beginning of the game.

i just want to sell some stuff.. so if i pick the surplus 20.. it means everything above 20 gets sold right?

and again, what is the reason to buy trade routes to stuff that doesnt say that it req it.. roof tiles and blocks for example says in red that its required... the others dont.. yet you have the options for it.. the description dont really state the big difference.

trade routes means some merchants come every once in a while to buy what is stored in your trade building.

if there is no route, your merchants that work in the trade building have to manually go other area sell stuff which takes long time.

buy trade route whenever you want to sell stuff is what i would recommend you to do ,this way your trade ronly care about getting stocks available to sell and not run around wasting time.

When you start the game with 50 coins

I always start:
1. Logging Camp.
2. New hitching post and buy an Ox for 20 coins. (You won't be able to upgrade the starting post as it costs planks).
3. Build the first house with double it's size in backyard. Upgrade the house with veggie backyard for 15 coins.
4. After basic needs are taken care of, use the rest of the coins to establish a trade route to export planks.

If you spend the leftover coins in something else you kind of get stuck.

Basic clothing is included with the Tannery making leather (needs hide)

Fix the lack of clothing. Upgrade houses to tier 2 and they will start providing coins.

Build a Manor as soon as you have a few tier 2 houses and charge 5% taxes (you can manually set the number instead of using the 10% increments that can be too harsh in the approval).

Right after you put up your initial buildings (First build granary and storehouse, wait till they are done, set a worker in each to bring in the supplies. Build logging camp, put 1 or 2 in there. build hunter berry and firewood, take the people from the granary /storehouse when they have brought in the starting supplies.) Build a place for one more oxen and buy it. Don't forget a well.

Then build 6 houses, I do 4 big ones for veggies, I don't do enormous plots just big :). And now you need to build a trading post. This is the important part, if you don't do this you can get very stuck. Pay 7 wealth to open up plank trade. Make a sawmill, and start selling planks, sell above 20, so you have for a church.

The money you earn, buy veggies and eggs and some goats for a tanner. You can also buy 2 apple orchards with money coming in, then they will be up and running asap in 3 years... ). Build the church right after these things, to increase people moving in. You can after this is done, actually set up a farm and have you whole pop farm through october and november, to have a harvest next year. It's good if you have 2 level 2 houses here, and have taken the oxen farm upgrade and are all set in october.

As soon as you have 20 spearmen, first winter after farm if you did that, go out on the map and kill bandits, you should be able to get 2 camps at least. Send the money to your town. I would open up trade for spear and shield and fill up the first militia.

Then build the manor, take out bandit camps to get 1000 influence, you'll get it with the first raid, buy a region, set it up to mule haul what you main city might need. I like to use a charcoal upgrade here for the new region, and have it send charcoal to my main town, and get firewood back.

What you do after this depends on the riches your region has, but open a traderoute selling stuff you can make.

Berries/dye if you got rich berry is good, rooftop tiles are also good.

What if you messed up and spent coins on something else? I can't buy a trade route to make money

Omg this helped so much! Unless you establsih the trade route, you're kind of screwed lOL>

Can I ask, do you have to have someone on storehouse/granary? Or only for the start for the supplies?

You can trade many things without having to buy a trade route.

If it says "NO TRADE" to the left, you can click on it for a dropdown menu.
If it says "ROUTE REQUIRED", you have to buy the route.

Kill some bandits, sell some coal and bows works pretty well.
