So I am not the only one who find archers completely useless.
redhongkong May 1, 2024 @ 2:34am
i havnt used archer yet, but consider so many troops having shield i feel they should be useless unless its heavy crossbow

Nah... They would have to form a shield wall for archers to be useless, and there's no Spartans here...

It is a known issue. In the creator version they were OP and where nerfed. But now they don't do any damage.

Knows nothing about lethality of bows.

Yeah they seem overly nerfed atm at least the warbows sell good but for now focus on melee guys.

u have to understand 1 thing, the reason crossbow got popular is not only because they puncture things, they also require less training.

in this game u hire bunch peasants to do the fighting. and they equip bow to be an archer?

no ... they are just azzholes

Never heard of the english longbowmen? They also were just a bunch of peasants.

Yeah in reality bows were very lethal unless you were wearing full plate armour or had a heavy shield.

They should at least mow down enemies like Brigands who are barely wearing any armour. Instead I have disbanded all my archers and replaced them with footmen, who are much more effective by comparison. It feels like the archers fire wet noodles at the moment.

I haven't said anything about crossbows. You said archers should be useless because of shields. It doesn't make sense even if they're just peasants like all the other units.
Zeion May 1, 2024 @ 3:03am
Bowmen just useless units right now but at least they can do some dmg when they clashed with enemies. or you can just use them for kiting some enemies and bring melee units to clash the other half for making advantage.

At least I can do the hardest achievement (win with only mercenaries units) with this strategy.

yea british longbow is famous, but have u heard of chinese longbow or indian longbow make a name in history?

not all peasants could shoot accurately, yea they might have the strength to draw and rain as commanded, and pray the lucky to guide the arrow.

i do own 2 recurve bows and i know how difficult its to train. but crossbow? nearly 0 trainning needed. all i need to know is how to lock and load

Never heard that average age of english longbowmen was around 50year old. To be longbowman you need a decades of training. No freshly mustered peasant have even strenght to fully draw this bow and hiting a target from over 300 yard's was impossible for them. Crosbows practicly eliminate those formation's from english roosters. And believe me, mongol's recurve bow's have the same strenght and you can use them from horseback. My polish ancestors use them to fight them. Their learned from the best to beat them.

Historically, archers were typically unarmored peasants, and crossbows weren't common until mid-late middle ages. Shields existed long before the middle ages. According to your logic archers should never have existed.

archer are skirmish units, they could rain arrow on lowly armored peasants/slaves and join the battle in melee fight later

they are more useful for big battle where army might push some unarmed prisoner/slaves into battle

they slowly phased out due to crossbow been more effective for peasants to use, and due to more army are standardized with heavier armor.
