The king's road

[it costs nothing to be kind]

I've established a trading post but it says I should connect it to the king's road to attract traveling merchants, it's the one wide road that was already there before I started setting up my village right ? I built the post right next to it so I"m not sure what's the issue

Redraw your road, sometimes there's a tiny space between it and the kings road and that's the reason you get the not connected message.

Are you building with the snap to roads checked? If not, you may have to build a piece of road from the trade post to the actual road itself, otherwise it won't be seen as being connected to the road.

Zoom out on your area map, and make sure that it is in fact connected to the Kings Road - that road will cross your area and directly connect into other areas.
