1 family eat more eggs, than they can produce
Are apples worth the perk point?
There are 7 food resources:
Meat: obtained from Wild Animals deposits at Hunting Camp
Vegetables: obtained at Vegetable Garden backyard extension
Berries: obtained from Berry deposits at Forager Hut
Bread: obtained from Flour at Communal Oven or Bakery Extension backyard extension
Eggs: obtained at Chicken Coop backyard extension
Apples: obtained at Apple Orchard backyard extension
Honey: obtained at Apiary
It´s not about how many types are available. It´s more about, which one you can get in masses. Only Bread, Vegetables (Carrots) and maybe Apples you can get in masses, to feed 350 and more people.
1 Hunting Spot or 1 Berry Spot isn´t enough, to feed 350 or more people.....
Especially if you're already supplementing some needs with meat. Eggs certain can be done, and should be done, in every plot that's short or not otherwise used for vegetables. They do add up if your level 1 and 2 buildings are all making them.
Unfortunately, honey is only at the production level of meat due to the limited amount of apiaries, so that won't help much.
Basically, you build an urban center, as you'll never supply more than the basics on your extremities. There's just not enough labor.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3235725304 you can see, that I produce nearly everthing and I know, that you NEED only 15 Level 3 houses, but what about 20 or more level 3 houses ?
So that´s a bug ? Because my level 3 houses are the nearest to the market, but still don´t have more than 2 different food types https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3235725344
Now veggies and bread are pretty easy to get in large quantities. If you spec into apples and rye, you get even more grain and apples actually make more food than veggies from a big yard but they take 1 year before they start returning anything at all and 4 years to get to full production (the game says 3 years, but this is 3 years and THEN it reaches full production the next year). This alone gets you to 3 food types, then you only need enough meat, eggs, honey, and berries to keep at least one in stock in order to satisfy needing 4 types.
Doing so without apples is significantly harder, especially if you have neither rich berry or animal resources in the region. You will need a lot of eggs, and even then will likely have to rely on importing food either via the merchant or pack posts. Right now the fact that food production is kinda overnerfed, there's no way to get meat from livestock, and there's only really one food crop you can farm and even then return is kinda crap means that without rich meat or berry deposits, a region really isnt suitable for a big town. We really do need more food types available to produce without wild resources, at the very least sheep above the limit of pasture space should be killed off and generate meat as new lambs are born. Maybe even have a butcher building to handle that instead of putting more work on the herders.
I'm hoping that far down the road when the game is much more fleshed out, balanced, and stable, that mods will introduce additional livestock, crop types and burgage food options.
