I watched the hunters the whole time in two different situations where they went trapping. There is a trapping animation and a graphic for it too. This was in the Winter:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3235615113
Then the other time they seemed to pick up meat off the ground out of thin air. I think this was during Spring.
I'm still experimenting so I don't know what triggers the "trapping" action. They don't seem to automatically start trapping each time I assign some to a camp. Perhaps there's a specific wild animal count threshold before they will initiate a trapping action.
NOTE - I think you might be able to cheese this mechanic by creating multiple hunting camps near where you've seen hunters place them in the past. For example, I build 5 hunting camps near a thick tree line where they trapped before, then I made sure to assign all 10 hunters at the same time. Almost all of them immediately went into "trapping" status. I'm going to keep testing, but I'm pretty confident several of them came back with meat from more than just hunting.
im always low on meat
I assume a trap was placed on this location. Just in this moment a tree entered my camery view, i could see if there was a activated trap object or not.
The hunters collect meat and carcasses (german: Kadaver), i dont know where the carcasses/rotten meat is comming from
i assume too, that there is a time where traps are set up?
My thoughts und Questions are:
1.) How many traps are set up?
2.) More hunters = more traps?
3.) When i limit the working area, do the hunters set up the same amount of traps?
4.) Are traps fixed or get set up every session?
5.( If fixed, what happens when you build on traps or forrest is cut down.
If building traps happens in a certain session, then it makes sence to let the hunters work here and the animal population should be minimal, to avoid working overlap in form of waste of ressources tought not hunting or not setting up traps.
Every hunter that executes the "Trapping" action will set a trap. In subsequent situations they will execute the "Harvesting" action, which as you've seen is to go to a trap location and pick up meat.
I now have 15 Hunting Camps near the forest at the edge of my region so the hunters from there only have to travel a short distance to interact with their traps.
I did my best to regularly check the stockpile view until the hunters finally stopped hunting/harvesting/crafting and I think they gathered roughly 90 meat in total (20-25 from hunting, the rest is trapping).
