Forget farms.
While I in real life grow my own vegetables and am largely self sufficient with veggies and can spare some which I often do I am under no illusion that it is a decent substitute for a good field. But even the good fields in Manor Lord are lacklustre, the only field which I find absolutely necessary is barley.

A double berry icon with the perk you can choose for berries can keep about 80 people fed, I added double plots with lots of carrots and only now got to apple plantations. No farms as they require a lot of effort for very little and some things about the production lines can bug out at times.

Fields are also extremely vulnerable to size issues, many Youtubers actually recommend small fields so your farmers can at least finish some fully, they won´t work on a non finished plot even though the maybe sowed 90% of the field.

PS: All my games start with no retinue for some reason, I don´t get the 20 spears/shields, so I am a bit slow on getting started with the economics.

Eggs, meat, veggies and apples is enough variety for a good while. I don´t feel the latter stages are fleshed yet out for continued endgame play.

I don´t give a crap about aestethics, all I care about is feeding my town, efficiency and productivity.

Then go play Anno.

Works fine in this game, why play Anno? Not a very constructive response, not everyone cares about looks.

No, of course, basically nobody cares about looks. People buy this game as to finish it as quickly as possible. Who cares about graphics.

Hint of the day: you can deactivate the sound, too.

awful looking town, I would hire a band of mercenaries and burn it to the ground. On a side note the home gardens do seem very powerful, especially if you make them comically large they can feed your town for a year and more. I still like to make bread for 1) larp 2)selling it and 3) food variety though you have already countered that

Cap. I crop rotate rye - flax - barley across three large fields, each in a different crop in the rotation so I always have an income of each of these three crops. I am DROWNING in bread with over 100 families.

You need to start on somewhat fertile land to do that early on, I think only two of the regions have that .. maybe one.

What I have done can actually be made to look pretty (some youtubers master that art), I just restart so many times that I stopped thinking about things looking good ... more to see what works and what doesn´t.

Hi Don,

Did you by any chance select the template scenario called Rise to prosperity?
It has armament delivery of shields and weapons off by default.

Farms are completly broken! I mean completly. They seed the field in november, instead allowing him to follow. No matter what you do, you gonna fck up yields pretty fast

If that were true, you'd be playing Banished instead of Manor Lords.

I know there's lot of topics on farms/food in general but I'm feeling like the main problem is food consumption vs. food input. You need crazy disproportionate amounts of food the bigger your population becomes.

This is often true in most city builders to a degree (especially "survival" city builders) but Manor Lords makes me feel like I'd need half the (entire, all regions) map surface to be farms or large home plots, for only 800-1200 population or something (number pulled out of my arse). Not saying that's true, maybe there's efficiency tricks I haven't figured out yet, but it sure feels like that in the early learning periods.

I've had it where surplus of bread was mega high/climbing and it seemed to go well but once expanding with more houses/people, and the the more spread out and expansive the town becomes, at some point even with adding ever more farms, veggie/apple plots etc. food stocks just plummet.

Friction factor in distribution?
Large cities were rare in the middle ages for a reason. (The game is probably not simulating this, but rather has some mathematics problem. That will probably be sorted outed sometime.)
