How do I establish a trade route to start generating gold?

Once you build the trade post, you click on the trade tab, then pick a commodity you want to trade. on the far left of the commodity line you will see it say "no trade" click on that and select "export" from the drop down list. Now you can change the "desired surplus" amount. select how much you want to keep in your village storage of that item. Then assign a worker to the trade post. They will gather the commodity and bring it to the trade post and occasionally sell it.

If you want to create a dedicated trade rout, then you will have to pay the trade fee at the far right of the commodity's line. buying a dedicated trade route is not needed to trade that commodity, but it does mean you will sell that commodity more frequently. I have been doing just fine selling planks from my trade post with out buying a trade route.

If you want to make money, either attack bandit camps, or tax your burges. Gotta build your manor then the tax office to start taxing your people.
