If they are indeed mining and no clay is coming out, try rebuiding the mine a notch towards the center of the patch. I think other buildings on or too close to the patch can cause issues too.
What worked for me was making sure my road connection did not go over the "orange" resource node.
I made sure my mine overlapped part of the mine but had a side off it which is the side I connected the road too.
For starters, I put one family in the mine and one in the clay furnace. Then, when the clay builds up, I move the miner family to the furnace until the roof tiles catch up.
They can generate good income, but be sure to keep a reserve for your own construction.
