What do horses do?

I bought one early on, but it just sits in its stall.
Am I overlooking something or are they only useful later, like for a knight?

Allocate it to your trader and it will speed up their trading journey time.

you can but its not neccesary, in the trader building window there is an option to permanently assign it, but its not neccesary except you have several buildings and you want to assign one specific to it, they will just pick the horse when needed if not.
