NPC lord had much bigger army. How to get more units?
I watched a streamer play Manor Lords. How many units of militia can you make? How many retinues?
The streamer had 5 towns. All she could create was 6 units, and then clicking the + button in unit creation didn't create more units. So she had 3 militias and 3 full retinues,
I watched a Youtuber game play. He had 15 units: 6 militias, 2 mercenaries, 7 retinues.

So what was it that limited the streamer from creating more units?
Was there no more men in the villages, was that the only thing limiting more militias?
I figure some of the maors weren't fully developed though.

Retinue isn't militia.

Aha, but I don't think the youtuber got 15 units because of a bug though.

But as no-one has replied how to get past 6 units, then maybe he was playing a test version of a game,

You can't get more than 6 without exploiting the retinue. So you get 6 units of militia, then (re)build manors to get +1 retinue per region and this way you go above 6 total limit

The retinue taking up a militia spot seems like a bug... retinue should be extra (and I wish I knew that before creating retinue, thinking of restarting now)... Also I think you should get 6 militia +1 retinue per town.

Totally OP right now, but I hope to see combat expanded in the future. The baron seems to have no problem fielding large armies, why should we be any different. Would be cool to see the baron attacking from each region late game when you have massive towns.

good luck killing anything with your 7 units of militia early game when they all 2/36 in strenght :D
Lol I may have worded that weirdly but they are all full 36/36

You are limited to 6 militia and 7 retenues (if you have 7 manors) but only if you create in first your 6 militia, otherwise retenues will be counted as a militia and your limit of 6 militia will be reach without having the possibilty to hire new units.

I guess this way to have 13 units is more a glitch than a real feature, and the dev will change that in the future.

You stated in your post that he only had 6 militia. As others have said, that is the max. You need to create 6 different units BEFORE you build a manor and then you can do the same thing.

TLDR:

To be able to get the maximum amount of units, you need to recruit 6 militia BEFORE building a manor.

Your first manor gives you one additional retinue of up to 24 soldiers (if you build a garrison tower, too).

You conquer your first other territory, then build a small village and an additional manor there. Also another garrison tower. This gives you your second retinue.

You can repeat that until the baron only has 1 territory left. At which point you can have 8 retinues and 6 militia. Which would be 14 units of fighting forces.

Then, if the game will still let you, you might be able to recruit additional mercenary companies. Which is how you get above 15+ units.

A little tip: Invest in at least 2 archer companies. Archers are the only effective counter to other archers at the moment. Enemy archers simply run from anybody else and cannot be caught up with. Until we have cavalry, archers are best against archers. Unless you somehow catch them with infantry, which I haven't managed yet.

In any difficulty setting, the standard army of the baron should consist of 5 units: 1 retinue, 2 light infantry merc companies, 1 archer merc company, 1 band of brigands.

If he has double the amount, that is a game breaking bug and warrants a restart.

Aha. Yeah. Kind of an exploit of something not intended, if that's how it works. Thanks! I'll tell the streamer to try that.

There's a version that the streamers got that the public didn't get. Some streamer said that on their channel.

Could be. I thought about the different version of the game possibility too.
