How to exit game

I am not sure if I am simply stupid or if my eyes have malfunctioned but how do I end the game? How do I get back to the main menu while playing? Yesterday evening I waited for the autosave and then klicked on stop in the steam library. It worked but I don't think that's how it's supposed to work.

The escape button should cover it.

press escape on your keyboard and you will see the save load menu and return to exit game

On your keyboard. It's the button on the upper left usually, saying "ESC" :-)

For most games, pressing escape will bring up the main menu.

omg, sorry of course I know where and what the escape button is... I thought the first comment meant that there is an escape button somewhere in the game/on the screen. I didn't think about using that one because I usually only play the Sims and Cities Skylines. The Sims always immediately shut down when pressing escape.

There's also the "Settings cog wheel" in the lower task buttons menu. It should also allow for getting out of the game.

I have the same issue.... All I get is a "return" option which takes me back into the game... how do you exit from within the game?

This was a bug, I re-created a new game and it doesn't do that now.

I also cannot exit the game. only the save menu then return option.

There is a bug that stops the esc button bringing up the main menu after a set amount of game time has occurred. The only thing to do is F5 to save your progress, Alt-tab out, stop game, restart, load quicksave and save to a normal save slot before playing on. Its a pain but only thing to do until patched.

After reading all the above comments all I did was manually saved, Alt F4 and restarted the game. Load the previous game you saved and then the menu options should appear when pressing Esc.
