Are you also hiring mercs? Enemies tend to have a lot of mercs.

The baron just makes use of mercs mostly, he only has 2-3 actual retinues. Beat a bug with another bug, namely just tell him you want a region and will make it worth his while, without actually giving anything to him. Also if you go to war you don't actually need to go to war you can just not show up to the battlefield.

Yeah but buyer beware there. Baron claimed a territory within the first year of one of my games. Turns out the battlefield was on my starting village and not in the region he claimed.

Everything being burnt down and everyone being slaughtered by 100+ units within the first 6 months is fun!

I guess you engaged the units? I had a similar situation where the A.I marched through my land... but I didn't engage... they ventured to a diff region. in my playthrough we're not at war yet... but not all regions are claimed yet...

I've had Large raider groups try to hit me... but you get a timer for that, at least I did... so I made sure I had some mercs hired before the countdown hit day 10... giving time to march the mercs to my region. also mustered a Militia... I lost 30 mercs but beat them without any impact on my buildings by going about it this way.

When i hire mercs they appear in different regions? How do you hire mercs for a battle and have them arrive in time to help you?

You can form a Militia, which is formed from families within your village.... but Mercs Always come from the edge of the map when you hire them... so you need to hire them with enough time to get them to where you need them :)

When hiring mercs you see which region they will come from. They always come from off map like the barons armies.

As for the Baron raiding your settlement, whenever you're at war with him if you want to end it just send a letter from the big map clicking on his portrait, tell him you'll make it worth his while and give him nothing, he always accepts. I made him drop his claims on the same region twice until i had enough to claim it myself. He contested, i sent a letter again and i won it. He responds almost instantly.
