Equipment for units
I've banked up ~40 sets of mail armour but this won't be equipped to my men despite the unit being able to equip it.

I may be wrong but i think mail and plate armor is only usable by your manor retinue; not your militia.

Which men?
Your Retinue gets powered up with plate armor, that is what they will take.
Your Militia will take Mail Armour at Tier 3.

Level 3 houses use mail.

Level 3 houses also house twice as many people while only eating 33% more food as level 2 houses.

Basically, once you can afford one level 3 house, you want to go all in on them.
Since its amazing for resource efficiency, population density, and militia quality.

Plate armor cannot be used by militia so just buy them for retinue is besy way and save your point for something else. hell i think whole armor thing is bust go for trade and food armor is cheap to buy as you can only arm 5 squad anyway.

Level 3 for helm and mail... Level 1 and 2 can wear Gossamer.

So is it tied to house level then? Like only some households can afford armor? Yet everyone can get a helmet?

Like I had three militias and everyman was able to get a helmet but only a few could get gambesons or mail.

It would be nice to get confirmation on whether or not house level impacts the distribution of armor among your troops or if it's a bug.

Yes it is a feature not a bug.

Has that been confirmed by the devs? Is there anywhere that can be read for confirmation?

I read it in the game, probably was a tutorial tool tip but it basically said that the equipment level your troops can use is based on house tiers.

Yeap, your right it was under the militia tab in the help menu.

my fault guys, armour (helmets, mail, etc) can only be equipped if the plot the militia live in is at a certain level, i didnt have any level 3 plots and so no one could equip mail :) thank you for the help :)

I stumbled upon this guide talking about retinues having a special insta hire plate armor button from foreign markets if you need to fast equip your retinue with plate armor for battle. Comes out of your treasure rather than regional wealth doing it that way.

Keep in mind the unit type plays a role. Certain units equip particular gear. If you are using archers they wont equip armor. I believe swordsmen and polearm units utilize plate, spears use mail? If all your units are same type IE swordsmen they wont equip mail armor. Also I was confused having 20 pieces of armor listed in tab and wondering why they were not used. I realized any number in the top toolbar is excess equipment available to new units or replacements. Current established units keep their equipment in their houses and will be equipped first before excess is kept.

I actually think armour makes units weaker. I notice that i loose more troops when militia is equipped with armour and fighting same types of baddies. I also noticed that militia will not wear helmets and gambeson. I haven't explored Mail yet.
