What difficulty are you playing? I'm on year two and the AI is just running around with two sets of 36 Mercenaries lol. Default difficulty.
The AI is currently too aggressive and gets multiple unfair advantages, so unless you have a lot of gold to bribe them, there's no way you can compete.
Look at this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
https://ibb.co/sKBQq8z
Here are 16 armies of 36 (includint 2*36 retenue!) + 2 of 18 = total of 612 men.
You can put in field 1 army of retenues + 5*36 militia = 6*36 = 216 men at best.
SO.....WHAT THE ♥♥♥♥?!
Well it is possible if you can field more than 6 armies.
At some point there is no more Mercs, so if by year 3 or 4 you did well, you can field like 400 men with chainmails and staff. Once you started to eat cchunks for AI army , he cant recover , as he only has 36*2 renetunes that he can recover.
And those 72 at the end as easy to beat with number advantage - 2 armies in hold position, 2-4 armies of billmen to flanc onagressive stance.
Again - 2 issues . the AI buying year 1 ALL mercs, the AI using 18 armies when you can use only 6
