You click the Burgage plot and if you have an extension or backyard to that plot you can grow stuff. Like carrots, apples etc. Option is right next to the upgrade house option.
Step 2: Select the orchard as its add-on.

Each tree equals one apple. The larger it is the more trees.
Build a burgage plot that is large enough to display the extra symbol "mallet in a shack" in its back yard. This will give you the option to build burgage addons like the orchard.
Yep, the apple orchards seem to be bugged. I have three of them, all contain more than 20 apples and none of them have even been transported to the warehouse yet.
I thought I read somewhere (some tooltip in the tech tree, maybe?) that orchards take 3 years to grow and have limited yields before then.
Yes, that's true too, but it has nothing to do with it. The point is not that the apples are not harvested, but that they simply remain in the houses after they have been harvested. They will not be transported further and will therefore never be used as food.
