Why is it called cosmetic day and night cycle

I see an option called cosmetic day and night cycle and it is off by default. Is this just to turn on day and night literally? Why would it be called cosmetic is it because the actual number of days will not line up with the cycles?

The game is already unusually dark, even in the day time, if you're not in an open field. It gets nearly impossible to see anything at "night" in a forested area. Even during day hours, I can barely see anything in my little residential area in the forest. And since there's pretty much no light sources (other than a couple campfires), there's nothing to really make the "night" stand out.
