It's hyped because of simply looking like a enjoyable game to play. With a setting that people like, and being cared for by a one-man team [though with additional help on the side lines.] There's also some odd hate going on towards Slavic who, quite frankly, doesn't deserve any of it.
He wants to perfect his product with every update, but is told by majority of the Alpha gang that they find it fine as it is, or they feel the changes aren't needed. Players willingly donated to him via patreon, and it's not even ran by Slavic and instead by specific fans on the earlier stages. He has been gifted a lot of stuff through the years by fans and by larger groups/companies alike. While yes it sounds like I am throwing in Unicorns and rainbows, the dude's pretty damn Humble. For the past 4 years I've spoken to him he's pretty genuine.
It isn't quite his fault either for the major hype, a lot of peeps in the TW community has been saying this will be a TW Killer, when we've been trying to dissuade the community in saying so. It isn't a TW Killer, it's not quite Anno either because ANNO focuses on multiple production chains, which Manor Lords isn't.
Love it or hate it EA is the best way to support this game and help the developer continue developing software. Especially considering that Slavic has been laboring (and not earning money) on this project for the better part of 5 years maybe longer. In order for this thing to be practical of course there needs to be a significant return.
All this being said, Slavic has proven to be a generally stand up person and more than trustworthy. As well, Hooded Horse have an excellent reputation and a very good line up of great indie games.
So I just find this drastic level of concern from naysayers unfounded and quite silly. Possibly paid bots attempting to Neg bomb the game? Perhaps.
Skull & Bones was in development for a few yrs from Ubisoft. Look how well that game turned out for them.
So every game, from every developer, moving forward is going to be bad? How is Skull and Bones even relevant?
Is not entitlement when a person pays to get a product, is entitlement when the product is free.
You may think it does not change anything, but current events (with other games) proves you wrong. Gamers vote with wallet.
It all comes down to price tag. Asking for AAA price and treat it as "indie" gives any gamer the right to criticism (positive or negative) and skepticism
