I agree! It feels weird that everything costs 5 more to import than export, making certain raw materials 5 times as expensive whereas some expensive items are less than double the cost to import.

Yes imports are not as cheap, but previously with the "Better Deals" you could buy them for the same as the sell price, which was super broken. The economy is much more balanced now. Still pretty easy, but better.
It's basically trading with another town.
If you sell something, they have to make money on it by selling it themselves, so.... they pay you less.
If you buy something, their 'vendor fee' comes with that price, so... you pay more.
