Since I'm not into aesthetics per se, I always plan to put those production buildings close to the farmhouses and have storehouses/granaries only pick up finished goods, cutting out the need for storehouses to be part of the production chain.
I simply don't allow granaries to store/touch rye, wheat or gain. BUT I have not figured out how to keep two separate farms from stealing each others rye/wheat for threshing. Back and forth across the whole map - it is beyond stupid. Gathering rye/wheat for threshing should be limited to the work radius like plowing/etc, but it is very not.
For the farms gathering materials from each other,
- If there's room between the fields, place the farms beside each other. In the middle with good roads to them. Even if they take materials from each other it's right next door.
