they still work fine for a stable food over time, imo (so far) but yeah, getting much *surplus* is a lot tougher, if you want that. You'd have to make more plots, take up more land, more often, over time, vs. population growth and just needing a few per town or whatever - eg, a lot of surplus isn't probably an efficient thing to do.
That said, I like it - I personally at least was tired of 1000's of surplus and making gardens smaller and smaller to avoid it. lol.
All I had to do was build one more large vegetable garden than I used to for a 100 family region (5 instead of 4) and I have almost the same output as before. I build mine with the housing extension and get them to tier 3 so I have 4 families to manage them. This results in less time harvest/planting and more time growing.
It's worth noting that food is not eaten in a specific order now. It's random. This results in veggies being eaten more and berries and meat eaten less. That could account for some people's reduced surplus.
