Proper town walls are planned for sometime in the future.
Moreover, walls and towers are just cosmetics with no practical use(for now).
We can't say at this point, all we know this is all stuff that will be expanded upon in the future, to call it just "work in progress" is an understatement.
While waiting for a version that really manages the city walls, does an external wall force the attackers to go around?
This would already be a plus to channel them towards the place best defended by our militias/guards
Not reliably. I had archers posted within my manor's walls to repel a bandit raid, but the bandits, when trying to attack the archers, were not completely held off by the palisade fence. Some of them slowly trickled inside and started attacking the archers.
Walls are purely cosmetic as of right now, and the towers do not seem to serve any purpose yet.
