I Knew this was a mistake
To purchase this game. It has all the dumb problems and unfun gameplay mechanics of the previous games. Get a mission? Can't complete due to bugs or Ai behavior. Get a resource within your boarders? Don't matter, Ai will B line construction on turn 1 to make a builders to make starbases WITHIN your territory. Got a planet that you've not colonized within YOUR territory? Don't matter, Ai will B line construction on turn 1 to make colony ships to take planets WITHIN your territory. Diplomacy? Ha. Trade? Good luck getting sufficient relations to not have to sacrifice everything you own for a cheeseburger.

Accidentally scroll with the mouse AND push a directional key on the keyboard? Lo and behold, the same damn bug from the previous games now locks your game on screen scrolling forcing a restart to fix. Graphics glitches? YEP. Ui not matching what is visibly on the screen? YEP. Your ship magically several spaces away from where it was when the turn ended and now you're unable to select the ship by clicking on it? Don't let that confuse you cause that'll happen often!

I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ spent so much time reading what the Devs and others had said about this game. Watched Youtube videos. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ I hate that I got fooled again to thinking this was anything different than the previous games.

I hope this catches anyone who was on the fence for getting into this dumb franchise.

Good feedback. Sorry you feel this way but many of these issues you can resolve with experience and some details in this that might actually help finally resolve some of these issues.

This is entirely a gameplay issue. The AI has to scout out worlds and they are going to grab everything not nailed down and you should do the same. It's an early race and you can do the same to the AI. You can rush a constructor on turn 1. The AI will rush by colony ships and constructors. If the tile is not your color then it's not your territory regardless of how close it is. You can take advantage of this too. You can also build influence starbases in systems you intend to take in the future. Lets say you have a good system with 2 cores and 2 colonies. Yes you can build a colony ship but a better approach if teh AI is close is to build a constructor and make an influence starbase. This way If the AI does attempt to steel it you likely will have built up influnece to put it into rebellion giving you access to that colony.

Regarding diplomancy there are many ways of boosting relations. Without any investiment in tech beyond universal translator you can.
- send a diplomat for +1 or +2 you also can get traits that allow you to get extra credits as well as the diplomat bonus of providing 1 diplo capital per turn that you can trade to the AI for more stuff
- trade open borders for +1
- consider offering a tribute take the tribute cost * 50 and you'll find you can likely make that money back quite quickly using diplomancy.
- Early game the AI is spending it's money so you probably wont see any good trades until turn 50.
I actually have started to stop engaging in diplomancy how strong the strategy is.
- friends treaty for think a +1
- each AI has a personality which allows you more opportunies for increase relations
- you can trade the exploration treaty to the AI for a decent trade. If you request an exploration treaty it will cost you. (if its on the left side your offering, if it's on the right side your requesting)
- trading with the AI is supply and demand. If they have 8 arnor spice they aren't going to give you anything for arnor spice. You can buy resources off the bazaar and trade them to an ai or you can buy from one AI and sell to another AI.
- The more you put in for a trade at the same time the less it's worth. It's best to only request 1 item for trade at a time.
The diplo game is actually much stronger than most people are aware they just dont take the time to learn it's nuances. Turn 1 I basically offer open borders, friendship, tribute and diplomat after 10 or 20 turns that relation has built up and then I can usually start trading resources. Once I hit around +9 most AIs will offer pretty good deals. If not I look at the negative modifiers. If they covet your worlds then your military is too weak. If they dont like your military build up then it's too strong. You can afford a few penalties if you get bonuses other ways. If done properly you can abuse the AI and know respond to an event for a diplo hit without worrying about it.

Many UI elements update the following turn.

I have > 3000 hours between both of these games and never could replicate it...however, I was using the steps you provided I got it to happen once.
- you might be the first person in GalCiv history that has provided details on what causes it. Yes, I've seen this complaint for a long time. But no one ever explains what they did to cause it except if they have a game pad. Also if you have a game controller you might need to disable it in Steam, can be done on a per game basis, because otherwise most games may interpret even the most minor axis which happens quite quickly as controllers age as holding down the arrow keys.

This is the AI is using wormhole generators on you ... most likely. There really should be a notification that this happened to you. Unless your absolutely paying attention you wont see the little effect that you got teleported. If a tile is out of your supply range you wont be able to move to it. You will have to move to somewhere within your supply range.

Devs have been a lot more responsive than the previous games. There are also elements that other players dont want changed. If you have a suggestion there is a suggestion channel on the discord and players can vote on it. Allow the devs to explore the communities views. From experience I can say even the most die hard design descisions can be reversed.

Some history
Devs said only 1 flag ship per civilization. Pretty much reversed. They are limited but before you only got 1 and maybe 2 more from commander ships.

Devs said UI fro ships should display very little information. I personally fought this battle and now you can get a lot more information about your fleet.

Devs insisted on 1 ship per turn. They are now looking to expand that in the future.

So dont think any decision is set in stone but I encourage you to check the suggestion channel on the discord and post your ideas. If they are popular enough they might be implemented.

Not to be contentious but starting off with the old adage of L2P doesn't typically entice the belligerent to want to continue reading haha.

That said, the particular mission to colonize a planet that spawned after an anomaly I believe. I can't go back and reload a save to give you the name of the event. However, it had occurred within my influence sphere. What I experienced was the Ai had a colony ship stationed outside the event area several turns prior, sitting in location and immediately took the planet within my territory once the planet spawned. Me being a smartass I can't quite figure what experience I'd need with the game to know that would happen.

This experience would also suggest that the Ai doesn't need to scout similarly to the previous games. Again, stating that a planet within my territory is completely accessible to the Ai to claim is one of those gameplay mechanics I'm referring too. It's not as if I can go to an empty plot of land in Spain and claim it all as my own. It's not like a day later I am rebelling against myself and instantly learning Spanish.

I'm aware the statement L2P isn't helpful but I didn't say that. Instead I shared things that I do for these situations.

Regarding your experience, you'll never know everything about how to play the game perfectly on your first play through and you will run into new stuff all the time. You can take your experiences to the next game or just save scum. Unless your streaming no one is going to know you did it :D.

Regarding your experience with the spawned planet. The player has this same power. Once you have cleared the fog from a tile you can see every unmoveable object on the tile. Having to double over all of your territory "just in case" a new planet appeared wouldn't be fun. If it's immersion that you require each turn is 1 month your probably has private explorers and scientist that will notice a new planet was discovered.

You may occasionally see planets just appear due to events the AI triggers. The AIs only advantage here is they can spot the changes in a fraction of a second. However, it's at a disadvantage that it generally cannot change it's orders as easily as the player does. So instead it keeps a colony ship hanging out in case something something pops up is is colonizable. I don't work for Stardock but I suspect this might have something to do with it.

I think there is a misunderstanding. My point is how a game mechanic such as the Ai leaving a colony ship next to the location of a "randomly" spawning planet within my sphere of influence isn't fun to play against. There is no fun in that.

And I'm back to describe another unfun experience due to game mechanics; I just started a new game to have an anomaly spawn a new civilization IN MY STARTING SYSTEM!!!! The very next turn this new Ai faction was given an incredible influence boost that wiped out any of mine from my ~1 hour of playtime in a new game. The very next turn I just lost my starting system to rebellion.

This is not a fun mechanic. This game is full of this. I've uninstalled the game.

Unless this happens every time, it is just a random chance that an AI colony ship was nearby to colonize it. (To emphasize "randomness", I've *never* had this happen to me in the 1500 hours I have played the game.)

You can reduce the number of AIs you play with or lower the difficulty. This is very manageable.

Again, not sure how reducing the Ai count or changing the difficulty is going to limit random events or the ability of the Ai to know exactly where to place units so that they are successful the very next turn when an event occurs.

Especially when Ai is nothing more than resource bonuses for difficulty lol.

It's purely just bad luck and RNG...nothing more. The AI isn't cheating you just got an unfortunate roll. The AI didn't know you were going to trigger that event when you did. It probably was already near it long before you triggered the event. It doesn't pick systems next to the AI.

Unfun and straight up bad mechanics is just bad luck and RNG? The Ai is literally what controls the story board on events and my single player opponents. In this very instance there was no other systems in the direction of the spawned planet as it was snug up against the map boarder and you're the one telling me the Ai needs to scout the other side of the map before it makes a decision lol. Christ you really make me wish I could refund.

Again, not an enjoyable experience.

The AI players aren’t cheating at normal or below difficulty. They literally have their own FOW. They are as much at the mercy of bad luck as we are.

As the guy who programmed the AI in this game I genuinely wished it was clairvoyant. It would make things so much easier.

With regards to scrolling bugs you mention, I haven’t seen anything like that. I’d be happy to look at your prefs.iini or debug.err to see if there’s something different about your setup. They’re in your documents/my games/galciv4 directory.

I don't think it'd be quite right to post the errors logs tho, it's quite long.

But, I can recreate the issue in any game campaign by using the keyboard to scroll while also using the mouse. This will always lock the game scrolling in the direction that I went in.

What keys on the keyboard to scroll and what mouse button. Is it immediate? I ask because trying this for myself I couldn't replicate it again.

yeah i had to refunded this game as well, going to wait to see how this develop end of this year and maybe grab it fifty percent off.

See this line:
DisplayResolution=-1 x -1

That is almost certainly the issue. Are you running this on a normal Windows PC?
