How are the controls for 2017/2018?
I like to know if the controls is okay or does it feel really old if I played it today.
I'm using keyboard and mouse.

On release it was the better game, and I will always remember this as the absolute best that splinter cell ever was. But against modern games, the controls definitely don't stack up.
For one thing they are too over-complicated, with too many keys/buttons for what is essentially the same thing, like using things, equipping weapons, vision modes and so on.

I just installed and started playing it again now for the first time in probably 5 years or so, maybe longer, and I will try to force myself to keep going until I get used to it again, but after just finishing blacklist for the second time, it won't be easy.

it's okay for the most part but using any weapon is clunky. you hold ctrl to open your inventory and to take the thing (weapon or grenades) into your hand you press E, which is unlike the new splinter cell games where sam always holds his pistol in his hand. gadgets like sticky cameras are fired from the SC-20Ks launcher attachment, so you can't throw them while hanging on ledges or anything

given how much the game discourages open fighting though, I'm not entire sure whether that is just old design or if it was done deliberately.

Thanks! I imagine it would be better if I use a controller?

Whatever you prefer, I guess. On Controller your movement speed (which also influences how much noise you make) is determined by how far you push the analog stick, on M+KB you change it by scrolling your mousewheel up or down.

I bought the PC version last year, played maybe and hour then put it down. I wasn't able to reproduce the subtle speed changes the xbox game controller provided with the mouse.

Will the PC version work with a game controller?
Does anyone here use an xbox/pc controller?

The game does sadly not support xbox 360 controllers properly, as the triggers do not work. Also the game has more inputs for stuff, like switching to sticky cam perspective, than any controller has buttons.

I used a xbox360 controller....works great.
The author of this topic has marked a post as the answer to their question.

The game still plays great in my opinion, the freedom of movement compared to Conviction and Blacklist is far superior. Blacklist is good but Chaos Theory is still the best in the series in term of movement, shooting not so much. I always change my controls in these older Splinter Cell games, Space to Draw Weapon and E for Action

Honestly it isn't clunky to control and the mouse wheel to control movement speed is good and easy to use, roll all the way down then up three clicks and you have a nice quiet but quick movement speed. Also any ledge you think you can grab onto in this game you can, unlike Conviction and Blacklist that limit you to prompt based jumps initiated by the action button.

It feels old in the sense that it hasn't been dumbed down to an overly simplified one button does 5 things setup, but seriously when you work out all the controls it becomes a great proper stealth experience that is still superior to Blacklist in my opinion, for example you can wirelesly hack computers by using your binoculars which is awesome. It really isn't that complicated to play even in this day and age of over simplified games ;)

1 bar law main,

How can you say the game has too many inputs for a controller? I have the original SC 1-4 xbox games and all game items are accessible via the original xbox controller including cam switching in CT.

Truly, it doesn't matter to me if it's an Xbox controller or 3rd party product as long as the controllers size and button layout are similar to the xbox, (muscle memory and big hands) and it'll work with steams SC PC version.

As for multi cam setups, as far as I can remember I use the option 1 time at the end of Bathhouse. My game MO is ghost, to police my material, for -0- evidence.

Anyone here have a preferred PC controller that works with SC and steam?

It's nice to see that a game this old still has some pretty active community.

Fisrt splinter cell I've played was blacklist. Really really enjoyed it. That's why I decided to play the rest. Played the first one on PC and men! The problem with earlier 3D games is when it aged it does not age well. Not a big fan of the controls especially the speed control using the scroll btn. I skipped Chaos Theory and played double agent since I thought it's the latest before conviction. The controls are pretty much the same or in some cases worst. But atleast the graphics improved bigtime.

The scroll wheel makes it impossible for me to ghost 2nd I blow chunks with the keyboard, (hunt and peck) for some reason I couldn't get my mouse and the game to jive. I have no use for anything after DA, after watching a few vids on them seems like they treat the player as an idiot, (go here, hide there, do this, do that) in big letters.

Yes, conviction was very like that. And it really didn't matter if you went stealth or not even on highest difficulty.
You could basically run through most of the levels and you barely had to aim and Sam would perform headshots on the run with even the worst pistol.

However, blacklist changes that a lot. Sure, it's still not as "hardcore" as chaos theory, and the first mission, while short, is pretty much just a "use cover here", "move to cover here" tutorial. It only lasts about 15 minutes, and after that you are free to play how you like, the stealth is far more unforgiving and if you are caught in the open on the perfectionist difficulty, then you're definitely going to die, especially in the later missions.

I would highly recommend blacklist, it's a great game and even a very good splinter cell game. Conviction is just an alright, ok-ish action game. Not in the slightest bit decent as a splinter cell game, even with Michael ironside as Sam.

My game uses minimum ammo, (only when forced to kill). On the last rewrite of my stealth guide, (3/27/17), my total game stats are

Time; 2:12:44
Kills; 3
KOs; 3
Smoke; 1
S Cams; 3
Distractions; 20-21

You have to use dgVoodoo for Splinter Cell 1 on modern systems or else the shadows and lighting don't work, set the DirectX videocard to GeForce4 Ti 4800, set VRAM to 256mb and copy the config along with the D3D8.dll onto the Splinter Cell System folder and you'll have all the proper effects in the game working, it still looks surprisingly good with this even tho it's mostly a flat textured game, working shadows make a huge difference ;)
