Splinter Cell games, ranked
An honest ranking in my humble opinion:

1. Chaos Theory - PC
2. Blacklist - PC
3. Double Agent - Xbox
4. Double Agent - Xbox 360
5. Conviction - PC
6. Splinter Cell - PC
7. Pandora Tomorrow - PC
8. Essentials - PSP

Side notes:
1. Splinter Cell 1 through 3 have 2 different versions: PC/Xbox and PS2/Gamecube, with the later having worse visuals, reworked and smaller levels
2. SC has 3 additonal missions on PC/Xbox though PS2 has a mission that isn't on PC/Xbox
3. SC and PT have 1 additional mission exclusive to PS2
4. CT has 4 more coop missions exclusive on PC/Xbox
5. DA on Xbox/PS2/Gamecube has the same awesome coop missions CT had, with 15 coop missions instead of 7
6. DA has 3 different versions: a) PC/X360/PS3, b)Xbox, c)PS2/Gamecube/Wii
7. Essentials is a collections of levels from SC 1-4 with levels reworked yet again and a few original levels.

CT, PT,SC1, DA don't have the later versions. After watching a few vids of Conviction and Blacklist I'm not interested.

I'd probably rate the first 3 games higher than anything recent. Chaos Theory is the pinnacle of the SC franchise. Great levels, great music, great dialog, multiplayer, 8 or so co-op levels that are very sizable and built specifically for co-op.

Double Agent for Xbox was more of the same. Didn't add enough new to the game and the levels weren't nearly as interesting this time around. Co-op felt tacked on. It was decent, but ultimately forgettable.

Double Agent for the 360 was worse than the original Xbox version, the main reason being half of the game takes place in 1 level. Booorriiiiing!

Conviction was a far cry from the previous games, and one of the lead producers on the game was quoted as saying that he hated the slow methodical pacing of the previous games. As a SC game, it was bad. As an action, pseudo-stealth cover based shooter, it was fine. Co-op was fun too, but it just didn't have the sneakiness from the previous games that fans wanted. They were trying really hard to get people from the mainstream shooters to take notice, and in doing that, they alienated a lot of long time fans.

Blacklist was a decent effort, but I found the super serious tone really funny for some reason. I felt they were trying too hard with the characters, and it came off as really forced. Glad they brought back stealth, but the levels weren't all that memorable. It wasn't a bad game by any means, but it wasn't an iconic hit like Chaos Theory.

You should try them though. They are superb games in their own right. Conviction is great fun with awesome levels and story. And Blacklist is top stealth gameplay. The coop is better than ever as well.

I have to say Peter each to thier own but how you have double agent and conviction rated higher than the original splinter cell & pandora tomorrow is baffling dude :)

I am not a total nostalgia goon but the First three will always be my top splinter cell games

...then blacklist but only doing ghost perfect runs.... its pretty satisfying getting ghost ranks on perfectionist in blacklist

If i am honest the rest i dont really much care for .......

What i like about blacklist is that it catered to everyone ... if you want to ghost you can , if you want to stealth panther kill you can and if you just want to go all out assault you can.

Although to me splinter cell has always been about stealth so running and gunning and killing people just doesnt do it for me..... but stealth killing panther style i can live with.

Is there a way to turn off all the neon suggestions? e.g., (hide here, go there, blow up gate, jump here, arrows pointing where you're supposed to go) etc. etc. The whole SC ideal was ingenuity, being told what when and how to do bothers the hell out of me. Another trend I prefered was ghosting the AI, some of the games went overboard with the forced KOs and kills.

Because of the scoring system in SC2, 3 and 4, my main complaint in mission end and game total scoring is, it doesn't include the forced kills. I even itemize munitions usage in mission stats for my 4 written guides. How anal retentive is that!

You can't ghost Blacklist. Just because the scoring system said I ghosted, doesn't mean I did.
The game forces you to be detected in cutscenes, or Briggs will shoot people, or the game makes you KO people.

dude i know that ... any mandatory detection phase you have to KO to get the ghost rank.

like at the end of london mission , escorting nauri to the dock , those god awfull FPS sequences where you play as briggs , the horrible airstrip mission and so on.

actually if my memory serves me you can kill as much as you like in those FPS sequences with briggs you just cant be seen to achieve ghost rank.

i thought it went without saying " everything else except those instances in certain missions "

speaking of transit yards man is just me but should of those FPS sequences where you play as briggs be patched out ? ...... they came from nowhere , no one liked it and why they put it in the game i will never know.

Josh,
Sooo Not Dumb! The elimination of a primary antagonist is requisite to mission success. Try not killing Hugo, Neddy or Shetland. It should be included unless elimination is optional as with Dahlia Tal in PT

You're missing the point Hoss. Inclusion should not lower your score, it should be part of it.

The correct answer is

CT > SC > PT > Everything else is just kak.

Double agent was boring as all hell, I lost interest on the boat mission because the level design was just horrible and the story was dreadful.

You really didn't like neither of the Double Agent versions?

Personally, I like Double Agent (both of them) more than the original trilogy because a) its story is actually personal and interesting this time and b) it's way more tense than anything in the original three games.

I loved the story, presentation and a change of pace from Conviction. The series formula become seriously stale with Double Agent. The series wouldn't have survived with the same formula a 5th entry. It kept the franchsise fresh and exciting from my point of view.

As for Double Agent, it's got more mechanics, moves, minigames and gadgets than previous games, you have two sets of objectives at any given point, levels change depending on your choices, multiple endings, best sensation of tension in the whole franchise, prison levels (which were awesome!). For me, Double Agent (both versions combined I guess) feels like the peak of the original Splinter Cell mechanics, taken to their maximum possibilities. It's Splinter Cell at its most varied. And I loved that.
