Once I finally found out how to beat him after the 4th lap, oh boy! I had the biggest grin on my face.
There was another mechanic in Mataan that involved jumping on a fire hydrant, then spinning to reach a higher area, and OMG that was probably the third time I grinned super hard while playing this game.
The second time was the boss fight, and the first time was when I heard "Light Switch" in the hideout...the vibes in that track brought me back to middle school....
Nostalgia aside, I 100% understand your frustration. My thoughts are a little different; I think it rewards adventuring and trying out several things in your environment to see how they work.
Your idea to find a way to introduce the mechanic, however, is a pretty good idea.
