If it ain't Professor K, it really ain't nothin'.
BRCFlunk is too fogazy. All corporate beat, no funkin' street. Too much $$$ for too little content. I refunded after I felt like I was a playing a demo - big empty area, lots of NPC recycle, object pop-ins on max settings, clouds don't move.
I like the idea of fighting back, but the combat in BRCF is so tacked-on feeling, and plays worse (in my opinion) than a PS1 game. And I, personally, am not a fan of the tagging system - I like being able to mess up, and perfect it so I doesn't mess up.
Here it's jus "we'll pause the gameplay around you and wiggle thumbstick to be done, maybe wiggle thumbstuck certain ways to be done slightly differently". I didn't know graffiti came with gutter-rails, like bowling.
God, and "Ass...ass...ass...ass...ass...ass".
JSR has it beat, for me, in terms of dollars to content - and I originally beat it on the Dreamcast when I was 10.
I'll buy this again at some point, no doubt (especially since there's a Beat mod even if it's Future design).
But it will be on steep discount.
A better design.
The nostalgia factor is kicking in strongly for folks saying this game doesn't live up to JSR(F), particularly with respect to music. JSRF had some absolutely awful songs (anyone remember Birthday Cake?); Funk Express in BRC is IMO better than anything in the JSRF ost and that's a statement I don't make likely because JSRF has one of the best OST's ever compiled. I've replayed JSRF many times and the soundtrack is so intertwined with memories as a kid that it gives the game a lot of charm but try to approach it neutrally and you realize... some of those songs are NOT good. "Like this, like that, like this this like that I LIKE IT I LIKE IT", would you EVER listen to this song if it weren't in JSRF? Absolutely not. It's 100% attachment to the memories the song brings.
Now, don't even get me started with JSR because that game's mechanics aged like milk. I can't think of a single thing it does better than JSRF (maybe more lighthearted?). It's essentially an elongated arcade game; it in no way compares to the scope of JSRF or BRC.
Expecting BRC to be a JSRF sequel is just silly. Y'all want a game so heavily cloned from JSRF that Sega sues? Y'all want DJ Professor K to save the day from DJ Cyber? Beat to make a cameo? Ridiculous.
Yes? It's a good song. It, also, is not nearly as mind-numbingly aggressive and irritating as a lot of the songs in this game.
It being an elongated arcade game is honestly preferable to being an aimless collectathon where the same five songs play ad nauseam as you're methodically cleaning up tag points. The issues with JSR are that it controls like ass and isn't as visually appealing as JSRF.
They were absolutely positioning the game to fill that role and you cannot blame people for having the expectation. No one was expecting JSRF characters to appear, people just want it to match/exceed the quality of JSRF.
It's fine, I've felt the same way since release, and I still don't like it, and I will probably never play it again. It's a boring game.
