Memories of Celceta also did I think. In any case there is nothing confirmed at the moment but I am sure you can find a definite answer on release.
The co-op thing for VIII you saw or heard was actually like a mod from Durante's team, thus explains why it is still in experimental phase, meaning it works but not perfect and odd things can happen.
For anyone who's hoping for similar thing in Ys IX, here is DuranteA response:
I really do want one, since I'm a huge fan of playing these types of games in co-op, and I hope I can make it happen at some point in the future.

I still remember Durante's rather harsh criticism of previous Ys games PC ports, and releasing of unofficial patches and/or mods to fix their problems.
It really is great that he got picked up by the dev team to help with the official ports, quality's really gone up since then!
