Fairy pieces?
Any chance of getting more pieces, like a grasshopper or a nightrider?

And how would they move? There are pieces to perform different roles on the board, so you'd have to actually come up with what these pieces are for and how they are balanced in the game, which is a pretty big thing to think about...

If you don't care about that and just want pieces you can call a "fairy", you can create or find a set of vector graphics, you could possibly make whatever set of pieces you wanted if you didn't care how they moved or what their roles were. (Might as well replace the unicorn or dragon. The only reason the pieces are unicorns or dragons is because it was easier to do a quick redraw of a horse head than make art for an actual new piece.)

Fairly certain that the unicorn and dragon were not chosen by the dev for the sake of simplicity but because they already existed as conceptual pieces. The unicorn, in particular, was an idea for 3D chess.

A "fairy piece" is just any piece with non-standard movement. Unicorns and dragons are both fairy pieces.
