Pieces move differently through time than on the board?
I've been playing this a bit but a big issue I'm having is that I don't think I understand the rules for how pieces move in time vs on the board. For example:

Why can a white bishop travel sideways and become a black bishop?

Is there a good rundown anywhere for how these pieces move in time?

In order to fit with the four dimensions this game plays in, bishops don't simply "move diagonally", they "move equidistantly through two dimensions at once". This means that the bishop in the image is moving not through the usual X and Y axes, but "one space" through the X and T (for Time) dimensions. (Note that for the time dimension, only one side's turns count as a "space".)

Note that bishops moving back through the T axis therefore have to move along exactly one of the X, Y, or L axes, so a bishop moving back "three spaces of time" has to both move either horizontally, vertically, or across timelines three spaces and not run into any other pieces while moving through those dimensions.

This guide covers the basics of the UI and how pieces move that the Dev didn't bother to actually explain to new players: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2176513845

Additionally, try playing the "Checkmate Practice - Bishop" at the bottom of the list of variants, and see how you can move through time and through alternate timelines to get a feel for things.
