Inventory item stacking
What's with items not stacking in your inventory? How you supposed to play the game if your inventory fills up every five seconds?

Which items specifically? Because items that degrade will never stack. Neither will potions or flasks if they've been used at least once.

You can note almost everything at a bank.

He's probably mining and doesnt understand that you can either A: drop them or B: bank them or use note paper (not worth it probably haha) to note them on the go.

Runescape is a live economy where players set the prices of things, with high alch value creating a baseline value for where things won't generally fall behind. This means you can't just be allowed to stack everything it would destroy the economy. Inventory management is a key part of this game so let me go over some of the way it can be worked with.

For starters there are multiple items that can help clean up the drops.

-The herb bag can hold any grimy herbs
-The gem bag can hold any uncut gems
-The seedice can auto convert seeds into a portion of farming exp and can be upgraded to collect seeds into your inventory.
-The herbicide does the same thing it converts herbs but it can be upgraded to collect them and if you have the herb bag the grimy herbs will be put straight into the bag.
-The spring cleaner is an item you can create with invention it consumes items called springs which auto-high alchs or disassembled items of your choice.

For ores you can create an ore box with smithing with higher boxes holding more ore. The bone crusher can auto- convert bones to exp like burying them would and be upgraded to collect them. There is also the ecotplasmator which converts ashes into exp like scattering would. Then there is the death note relic gotten from archaeology which auto notes bones and ashes prioritizing that over the destruction which means it will note them and the bone crusher will pick up the noted bones.

Just about any item can be noted using magic note paper/enchanted note paper, one comes from Treasure Hunter/oddments the other is created via invention. When using it it turns an item into a noted item at conversion rate of 1 paper to 1 item. A noted item stacks and can be converted into an un-noted item via the bank.

Then there are the porters items created using the divination skill. A porter can teleport a number of items when gathered this includes basically everything from any gathering skill so fishing, mining, woodcutting, etc... as well as some other stuff like leather hide dropped by cows. These items will be teleported to their respective banks so materials from arch are teleported to material storage, ore is teleported to the metal and ore bank, and everything else is teleported to your regular bank.

Porters have charges, a charge is consumed every time an item is teleported. When all the charges is consumed the items disintegrates into nothing. Different levels of porters have different levels of charges and the necklace "grace of the elves" can hold 500 charges from porters itself which is more convenient than using the individual porter items.

Finally there are beasts of burden which are summoning familiars and one of the big perks of summoning. The beasts of burden act as a second inventory and the level of beast determines how many inventory spaces they have. Certain skills have familiars that aren't strictly beasts of burden but carry or gather specific items unique to that skill like the nightmare mushaph gathers and has a second inventory for energy and memories gathered from divination.

Hope that helps, this is an intrinsic part of the game.

Thanks everyone for your replies and Aquasword for your comprehensive tips! I was getting frustrated yesterday as I had just started the tutorial and as part of the tutorial was making food and getting 10 food as rewards and then making armour and mining and cutting trees and my inventory was constantly full. It seemed a bit strange to put food in the bank and I wasn't sure what to keep and what to get rid of, but I have a better idea now.

Yeah with a limited amount of space in your Inventory/Backpack of only 28, you have to bank nearly everything you wish to keep. That's what it's there for, to save your items so you don't have to carry them around with you everywhere.

Since you are still doing the tutorial, the impetus is to try and do one after the other and not bank in between but you will find that it really does help to think of them as separate things to be tackled instead of just one long tutorial and clear out your Inventory whenever you can because most items do not stack.

As stated above, there is such a thing as noting, which basically is a bank thing to be honest. The note or certificate states that you are entitled to said number of individual items which can be exchanged at the bank. This is done to save space. So at your bank, you will see the option (lower right-hand corner if you hover your mouse over the buttons, you'll learn which one gives you notes and which items).

For now, since you are still getting used to the game, just understand that 28 is your limit. Again, as stated above, once you get more familiar with the game and the skills, there are beasts of burden that you can summon to carry extra items for you. These are limited in quantity as well. For the time being, just familiarize yourself with those banks.

Have fun.

Thanks BuzzardBee! I will look into that 'noting' as it sounds like it will really help! I did get some certificates instead of items as a reward for something, but I didn't really understand the reasoning for it. It sounds like that's what it was.

Very old school, back when the game first was launched, they had certs, short for certificates. Those have since become notes. Same difference. A sheet of paper that stands in for however many actual items it represents. When you go to a bank and deposit it, you can then withdraw as many or as few of those items as you wish. They will all stack in your bank but they won't in your inventory/backback unless you withdraw preferred amount as a note.

You should see the toggle (note/item) on your bank interface at the bottom right corner when you hover your mouse there.

If you need any other help, please don't hesitate to ask. Enjoy your game.

Good thing you don't play the game then, eh?
