If You're not a fan of Auto Logouts
Learn to at least tolerate it.

For the newbies:
Inactivity = no click no type in game
5 min inactivity - auto logout
4 hr - warning, and to drink
6 hr - auto logout (Regardless of what you're doing)
20 min inactivity during combat - account stops attacking - eventually auto logout

They say 6 hr auto logout is a way to regularly reset the game engine and minimize performance issues. But, OSRS still has pffttttttt optimization by today's standards so forget that.

You would think Jagex would be happy about people playing the game all the time. But there were underlying issues. I think Jagex never saw the absence of 6 hr auto logouts as a good thing because in the past:
1. It has been one less barrier to supporting botting.
2. People gravitated towards activities that (unintended) looked sort of like botting.
3. There was a rise of dwindling community interaction among low level players.
4. It can be unhealthy.

Levelling up was extreme. For example, Training stats through splashing and NMZ camping. There's a significant amount of people who took advantage of this because in essence, doing it isn't wrong. What's wrong however is when host bots became "essential" and popular in NMZ. Everyone who trained there encountered them directly at some point. Since people pay hosts, It became a lucrative business for them. And we all know botters can be goldfarmers too. You literally can go to sleep or go to school while your accounts train without help. I believe splashing was additionally also restricted from certain areas (Lumbridge) because they don't want new people to see and adopt this unintended training method.

Of course, it was a nuisance when 6 hr auto logouts came out. People's excuse were more of "I was so used to leaving accounts unattended all day", and "This game is so hard to max combat easily now" than "I cannot finish this in 6 hours". At present, you can still splash and camp NMZ, but it's legitimately less AFK.

For those who didn't miss these things, sucks to be you. (I'm kidding)

Ok, now, the way around unexpected logouts is to logout and relog back in when you're gonna do a task that you know would take time to finish. This resets the timer for the 6 hr auto logout. With some bosses like Jad, you can pause (by doing this) once during the fight. Other purpose is to pretty much to address health too. Yes, OSRS is addicting and bad for you. You shouldn't stay too long at a time in this game. The warning would make people aware how long they've been playing, forcing them to take breaks, rotate activities and give training spots to other people.

Other methods that resets the auto logout timer are by refreshing the client and by hopping worlds.

Another (less probable) reason why auto logouts are a good thing is in case someone hacks your account. It would be really bad if you can't lock them out and they can stay online indefinitely. Well, until they take down your bank pin. OMG that's sounds actually horrible.

Compared to other MMORPGs, OSRS is up there for being grindy, but any less simple would be..RS3 (ehem). If you think the one you want is more in line with idle games, where it is more "I own the account but I don't really play it" sort of thing, I don't think you'll like OSRS.

Was this introduced recently? If I'm reading that right, then wasn't this directed at those splatters attacking lvl 1 rats endlessly in various parts of the game?
(Splashers* my bad)

yes, those are what you call splashers, AFK was nerfed way back (like 2015), I believe 6 hr auto logout came out first, then they additionally added 20 min cb inactivity thing. Basically all training methods with infinite aggro were affected -- splashing and NMZ were the main ones

"6 hr - auto logout (Regardless of what you're doing)"
I have deff played for longer than that, but there's a chance I hopped worlds in that time.

It was introduced in 2016 or 2017 if im not totally wrong. And yes, splashers need to click the screen 1 time per 20min. I've seen alot of splashers that just take hits

the 6 hour thing, the odds are within 6 hours you will log out at one time or afk and get logged out resetting that 6hour time, ain't it? even world hopping probably resets it
