Combat stances like Nioh2?
Hi. Interested in buying the game once the performance issues are resolved, and I am wondering something about the combat.
For context, Nioh 2's combat is by far one of my favourite in the last decade. Big fan of the combat stances, especially. Are there stances in Rise of the Ronin? If so, how do they compare to Nioh's? thx

Edit: thx everyone!! I think now I know what to expect from Ronin's stances

there are stances
Yes and no.

It’s separated by styles and some styles have stances and some do not.

It's different from Nioh, but there are many stances for every weapon type. The stances are primarily utilized to take advantage of weaknesses towards enemies as they fall into a few different types. An enemy will receive more ki damage when their weakness is used and conversely take less when they are strong against a stance type. The stances do have different attacks, but every weapon and stance are limited to a regular string of attacks, a forward attack, and a charged attack. I think it's important to highlight the difference as it didn't feel like Nioh to me personally.

Combat stances are effectively gone now. They took the nioh system and simplified it down. Now stances just give you a disadvantage or advantage against the enemy stance but they are not very mechnically deep and you cant customize the skills you have on them. Nor do you get ki back from stance changing in combat.

This is plain wrong, there are affixes that allow you to gain % Ki on Executing stance/weaponswitch aswell as parrys, combo fluidity is more fluid than Nioh and once you found a stances that combo into eachother that are fun for you the amount of pressure you can inflict is akin to Claws.

To get back on topic, there are 3 combatstyles to choose less individual moves but alot more room for experimentation. Less packed into 1 package but more in general, it's incredibly fun with all the combinations and some of flow you can achieve rivals Ninja Gaiden.

It is insane.

While they do have less skills to expand them, the core styles are more different then stances were in Nioh. In Nioh it was really just a question of choosing between fast, average, slow attacks with damage scaling between them.

Styles in this game are more like styles in Way of the Samurai where the moveset is what matters the most.

So idk if I would call it simplified rather then different.

If you want Nioh's stances, Nioh-ryu is a style that gives you its 3 stances, but you don't get to equip abilities to the stances anymore. They are hard defined to the 'signature' moves for each stance.

Not really.

RotR has 3 stances like Nioh. Jin, Chi, and Ten and then a fourth special stance. However this time the stances are full fighting styles like in Ghost of Tsushima and can be upgraded to have 4 martial arts skills. I like this more than Nioh 2 because you are learning actual forms like Ghost of Tsushima. You just learn way more. Wo Long is like a much more dumbed down version of Rise of the Ronin's martial arts. You get 1 stance in Wo Long with 3 martial arts that are randomly attached to weapons. In Ronin you have 3 stances that you can choose with up to 4 martial arts each. In the equipment menu there is a separate hidden menu that lets you create loadouts.

There are stances but they work very differently in Ronin than Nioh. Rather than having a High/Medium/Low stance that remain mostly the same the whole game, Ronin has interchangeable stances where any of three can be equipped at any time each stance is a wholly different moveset with it's own combo tree that give specific stat buffs or debuffs over other stances requiring you to change your stance based on the enemies stance.

many ways to swing sword
few reasons to want to

Nioh 2 and Stranger of Paradise enemy variety gave you a reason to want to use the mechanics. Most fights in Ronin just feel the same, which turns all the mechanics into not much more than flavor
Yep, there are stances offered that feels more natural. Its more of an optional choice than getting forced down your throat Nioh's way. Also less clunky and of the white elephant variety from that of Nioh. I guess they do learn to improve interesting but failed features from their older series and improve on them.

Well that is kind of obvious, you aren't fighting yokai or monsters. Yokai are like 90% of the enemies in Nioh with the remaining 10% being reskinned fodder or human bosses.
