No, there isn't.

Almost all of materials about Yasuke come from the 2023 when AC Shadows is announced or from a book by a dude called Thomas Lockley, they make that ♥♥♥♥ up as they go.

Luckily, now they admit that there's a backlash and wants to put out the fire. The only entertainment left is watching the slow moving trainwreck that is Ubisoft.

I don't care about what non-Japanese historians have to say about Japanese history all that much. Yasuke's history, Japanese history is best told by people who actually care and would have more knowledge on the matter. It's probably in their best interest to give their own history a fair stab at inaccuracies, speculation, and facts....

Speculation about Yasuke existed before the social political grifts of 2023.
You are in for a show then since Japanese historians barely have anything said about him, game creators just think oh a black dude in Japan, cool.

It's non-Japanese "historians" who want to hype up about "diversity" (read: black people) in Japan.

Don’t bring that garbage here. Yasuke was literally in Nioh 2, and nicknamed the Obsidian samurai. You fight with him as an AI partner in a couple missions.

I think he is also a boss in Nioh 1.

he is, but you just kill him, watching small cutscene where he serve him and that's it

Because there isn't much to say. Very little is known about Yasuke. Which is why the very basics are his name and his somewhat honored, but broadly vague servitude to Oda Nobunaga. Almost everything else is guesswork and speculating.

Regarding game devs or other creators, Japanese or otherwise, Again it's creative liberties to do what they want with the character, It's the people that only look along racial lines that have a problem with it.

Luckily, not!
You will find William from Nioh in this game though, as a cameo fight.

Not just a cameo fight. You have to beat him if you want to unlock Nioh-ryu/style.

Actually, yes. Your wishes will come true! Just design a black samurai right in the character creator! And you can create TWO at once (twins). Just choose your skin tone and your wet dreams will come true! How easy! :-*
you are clueless, you don't understand what he mean

No, actually I know exactly what he meant. You just didn't understand my humor. Which happens to me often. Czechs have a humor that no one abroad understands. Apparently.
No bro

He is referenced in an easter egg though. If you find William he has Yasuke’s armor set

I mean you could make him. But don't think he's in the game.
Make a mod to play as Jin from Ghost of Tsushima.

That is only a strawman argument, nothing more. People care about historical and cultural relevance. Noone complained when he was in Nioh 1, because he was not a main character there.

Speaking of Nioh 1.. William who is also a foreigner is a main character there. But he is not passed off as being a highly honored part of history but rather as kind of a tourist and honored guest who has to work his way up to fame and only through the help of legendary Japanese characters like Hanzo. They even tried to make it very historically / culturally accurate in that respect. His spirit speaks Irish, the ship he was on had a Dutch name and he himself speaks English while the rest of the cast (aside from Kelley and Maria) speaks Japanese with Hanzo sometimes speaking Engrish.

I dont think AC:Shadows did anything remotely similar with Yasuke and his role in the story.

So no, its not about ''only looking along racial lines''.

The fanfic from non-Japanese ''historians'' like Lockley existed before 2023.
This game takes place during the Meiji Restoration Period (late 1800s), 400 years after the Sengoku Period when Nobunaga was actually alive. So nope.

Because you don't have his armor...smh. Playing as Jin is more than just looking like him in character creation.

Can we agree that Nioh is a fantasy game compared to Rise of the Ronin, while still having some anchor in semi-realism? I mean, Nioh and Ninja Gaiden exist in the same setting, for Pete’s sake, so the ludonarrative dissonance is higher in Nioh.

As I expressed in my prior post, Yasuke’s english armor description is based on Lockley’s fan fiction rather than the Japanese version. Probably yet another example of localizers doing a poor job.

Lockley started around 2018 by editing Wikipedia’s Japanese entries, using his academic “research” paper from 2017 as a source. While his commerical book is from 2019.

It's important to note in his academic paper, who are written in Japanese, he did not make the same claims as in his commercial English book. However, he used his academic paper to support the narrative presented in the commercial book - might why the Academic commision from Nihon Uni had no big objections to his paper.

So yea this guy is some piece of work.
