People just like to use the word with an L instead of a K so they can feel smarter than others around them.
But like stated above the most common/convinient answer is
- Roguelike : Do not have meta-currency to buy things outside of a run that will alter said run
- Roguelite : Has some kind of meta-currencies/upgrades that makes a new run with some kind of upgrade/downgrade
Which is what people often use as tags on Steam making it easier to reference and find games that you want, so pretty convinient. The warrior that we do not need but that we deserve!
Words change or are being used differently sometimes for convinience; especially old ones (like that Rogue game).
If you stick to the old rules then every literal game in the world is an RPG because they are Games where you Play the Role of someone/something..
Unless you find that a good thing..
