As you progress further in the game, you'll have the option to establish a headquarters and recruit management personnel such as purchasing and logistics agents as well as HR managers to oversee your business's workforce. This will significantly reduce the amount of manual work involved.
From my understanding this is due to evolve fairly quickly as game development progresses.
In a serene and composed manner, I'd like to share that I haven't checked on my initial businesses for over 300 days, yet they continue to generate positive revenue daily. This appears to be a fine example of an automated system in action.
rent building
buy furniture/equipment
go place the furniture, do some interior design (don't expect anything creative or fun... well maybe for the first 5 stores it is, like playing the sim but after the fifth stores you will see what i mean)
open business
profit
and repeat
But if you wanted to automate things like hiring people for new bussiness, growing already existing one and such then you actually have to do those things manually. If you are just starting then this is fine, but from one of the video ads I gather that you can own a lot of businesses, like for example 30+ and managing your investements at that point can be a bit of a pain. IRL some of the stuff is handled by directors (and what not) once the company is big enough. Of course you can still oversee it, but overall CEO is all about the big picture, not small stuff like deciding who to hire for fixing printers.
