So, the idea is to release Z while at a certain point, which will release the shell and throw it to your right. You'll then also release the jump, to fall back down onto the shell, while quickly re-pressing it to get a lot of height out of the jump.
It's a tough trick, and it's also really hard to describe in text.
The hardest trick requires that you do it in a mostly stationary position (without any time to set yourself up in the correct position), so practice that. If you're too close to the wall, the shell will phase through you.
