well it's crossplay i believe at least between egs and steam, i'm pretty sure its always had a relatively lower player count but it shouldn't affect your matchmaking much (?), i was going to hop back on it with a fresh start as well to check it out

i just look up on how MP work in this game, abit unclear tbh. for expedition, can you join to random people lobby or its have to be premade team?
Its similar to Bloodborne in that co-op requires a consumable item to summon somebody (even NPC summons). You get those same items from summing enemy player NPCs (they are AI controlled) and defeating them, and they're relatively easy to defeat, so you can farm the item, called 'Okocho Cups' pretty easy. It's basically blue phantoms = ally NPCs, and red phantoms = enemy player based NPCs.

Defeating the enemy player NPCs also gives you a chance to obtain one of their pieces of gear as well, so higher level phantoms can reward you with higher level gear and so on, on top of the amrita (souls) needed for leveling up.

The game also populates the field with AI generated phantoms, so regardless of what level range you are at, you'll find help if you absolutely need it - though the phantoms summoned do have a limit to their active time. When you kill anything while an ally phantom is out, a meter drains, and when it exhausts completely they return home, similar to Dark Souls 2's small soapstone.

Can't recall, but it's possible when playing with player directly invited to your game it will function more like the large white soapstone from Dark Souls, which has no 'kill limit' and can play a mission from start to finish.

Once a mission is complete, summoned allies return home, regardless. The difference here is that you are allowed to replay missions you cleared, so you can keep playing missions to your heart's content and re-fight bosses and whatnot. Makes it a hell of a lot more co-op friendly than Souls games have been - especially without having to worry about enemy players loading into your game (which would be even worse on PC with all the hacks available compared to console).

I'm down for playing since i'm starting over on PC, but am experienced, so not exactly starting blind. :P (I'm like... level 3. Can't solo the first horse boss yet)

Wish it had crossplay with PS4/PS5. Would help with player count, although it is already an old game that released several years ago. These steam sales can help keep it alive, at least.

I just started playing but I've still been able to summon visitors using the ochoko cups. Even in the really low level missions on new game, which has been surprising me and a lot of the time I don't even wait very long either. Though queuing expeditions is a different story. Don't think many people do that mode.

Thats only partly true.
The game has a proper coop mode called expedition. In expidition the game introduces a life gauge which functions as a second life bar. When a coop player dies it drains, when you kill yokai bosses it replenishes. You can also revive your partner and play the whole campaign in coop. No items needed and very comfortable to set up. Just create a lobby and invite your friends or set it to open.
To clarify, there is expedition mode and random encounter mode. Both are co-op options. The latter requires the host to consume Ochoko Cups to summon other players. Expedition mode does not.

In expedition mode, there's an 'assist gauge' that appears. It drains whenever a player dies, and when it's fully depleted, it's game over. When a player dies in expedition mode, the assist game will drain, but another player can move to the dead player's location and revive them, which replenishes the assist gauge.

The assist gauge also does not drain at all during the boss fight at the end of the stage, so as long as one player is still standing it can be cleared by everybody (though they should be focusing on reviving at least one of the downed players so they can abuse the revive system as much as possible).

The other difference in assist mode is that enemies won't respawn when resting at a shrine (bonfire), making the run much more linear. Each shrine only works once for restorative effect, and when a shrine is first used, all players are teleported to it and are recovered. After the first use, only the host can use it to config what options aren't locked out to them.

In expedition mode, enemies also scale up in difficulty and quantity depending on how many players are present. Another difference in expedition mode is that players can join missions they haven't beaten themselves, which also means the potential for spoilers is high if going in blind, but is another way to obtain higher end loot from later content, early.

Expedition mode also features 'The Depths', which is a 50 floor, procedurally generated dungeon that players must survive. It can't be accessed in random encounters mode, but makes better sense of the phrase 'expedition', as players can tackle the run through as many floors as possible. Clearing floors in The Depths keeps the party together, so you aren't sent back to your own world as you would with clearing a standard mission. The Depths progress saves every 5 levels, so the host can re-host a Depths run from one of those fifth interval checkpoints.

The Depths becomes accessible after beating a mission in chapter 5 (no spoilers).

Edit: Correction - After completing a mission in expedition mode, the party isn't split up like they are in random encounters, but all return to the player's hut, which serves as a lobby, and the host can select the next mission. Thus it can keep the party together and can keep playing without having to re-match with other players.

So if I want to introduce my friend to this game, should we go the normal route like souls by summoning through items or the expedition mode?
