How to progress in DotD
I just reached DotD with a tonfa build, not really utilizing any ninjutsu or onmyo except for some weapon buffs, and I just feel like I'm very underpowered. Should I focus on hard leveling and farming for sets to muscle through till I get to DotW or is this the point in the game where I need to start getting a real build together? Any advice that is isn't just "get good" is appreciated lol.

Get a real build together: the sum of all the small increments from sets, onmyo magic/ninjutsu is a stratospheric increase in global damage.
My first “build” that I augmented throughout the first 3 levels of difficulty (included), was a lightning-based build with onmyo magic for self-buff (and enemy debuff), using 6 pieces of the Golden Boy Set and at least a soul core to cause confusion (Sukuna or Otakemaru).
I switched to corruption builds with Susanoo ethereal grace on Dream of the Wise and tested many things from then onward.
To finally land in post endgame to a corruption-based build with Ame-No-Uzume + Susanoo (hard but rewarding).

Yeah you are. Onmyo or ninjutsu are kind of non-negotiable at this point in the game, pick one or the other though you can't do both, I personally find onmyo much more useful

What would using Onmyo entail? and why is it so useful? like I get the usefulness of stuff like sloth, but the offensive spells seem kinda meh, and so do the weapon buffs.

It's because you need to invest into onmyo magic power for them to do reasonable damage and have good duration, also the spells are more for applying status effects than damage. But anyways the three talismans you should always be using are rejuvenation, barrier, and steel. Constant health and ki regen + damage reduction is useful for every fight in the game, other spells to check out are elemental familiars and spells (fire, water, lightning) for applying status effects and confusion

You can have:
- Self Buff
- Enemy debuff (weakness talisman)
- Elemental damage (and confusion if you use 2 non conflicting elements).

Practical example:
Onmyo to recuperate faster your ki + Nupeppo soul core active ability.

use onmyo, use ninjutsu, get yourself grace of benzaiten's level 6 set bonus, use your soul cores

At DotD you need:
> your favorite weapon on 170 (+15) levels
> your favorite armor set at least in 170 (+10) levels to prevent taking too much damage
> uses depending on weapon most ki-damaging abilities to get yokai out of ki as fast as possible
> heavily and constantly using soul cores anytime then yokai is out of ki
> understanding chaos/discord/whatever-you-like-it-calling mechanic (2 different elements on enemy at same time), trying applying chaos in every fight to drastically decrease killing times of bosses
> magic and dexterity al lvl 30 each to max capacity
> be good if parrying any red attack (on DotW and above you desperately need to be perfect at parry all red attack)
> quick change scroll from ninjutsu are mandatory (especially in dlc and late game area) to preventing one-shotes

For me I really don't like idea of that you need farming some early (green) graces, yes for sure you could farm it but for me it's too much time wasted for very little effort, just because on DotW some new (orange) items and graces starting to appear, and they are so superior in every way that for me only they are worth time to farming

This is very true DotD graces just suck and are a complete waste of time

You should start investing into Omnyo and Ninjutsu skills.
Focus more on Omnyo, for ninjutsu just grab poison shuriken, sneak attack and stuff that improves your character like poison control.
For Onmyo sloth, weakness, rejuvenation and pleiades are very useful.
