Are you always supposed to do side quests in order to lvl up?

I find myself that I need to do most of the side quests in order to reach the 'recommnded' level for the main missions

To level up, no. But side quests give you other things, not only levels.
And you don't have meet the recommended level for the mission. 👍🏽

main missions are tough to do back to back if you don’t gear for them but they’re still doable underleveled - and because you get exponentially more Amrita and proficiency xp as you progress, you can only fall so far behind the curve. It is entirely possible and even time efficient to clear the game by only doing the main missions because of how explosively powerful higher-level gear is.

Side missions sometimes give important goodies like extra jutsu skill points, guardian spirits, and in certain duels’ cases you can even get special attacks, so they’re still worth doing.

thanks, yeah I just do the side missions as they are somewhat new locations, and I can quickly clear them in a short time in between

I would recommend doing all of them on a first playthrough they're just fun and don't feel as "high stakes" as the main missions if that makes sense lol

recommended level doesn't matter as much gear level

you're not SUPPOSED to do side missions if you don't want to, you could even skip em all but you'll be missing out on some cool spirits etc.

Sure you could do whatever you want however I recommend you do all side mission on regular ng, most of them are fun, many leads to unique maps and spirits

One exception could be "against everyone", last side mission on last dlc, this is brutal and really unforgiving marathon of many bosses and tough enemies combined all together that you must defeat one by one

On ng+ and beyond situation are much better, you could play only mission that you like and never touched you don't

As for me I endlessly hate "moonlight prayer" and "Okuni searching" because extremely useless companion that are 24/7 trying to do suicide so I never played this mission on any ng+

Man they sure are fun. The 2nd sub mission being just the graveyard was a great arena, spent like 10 hours there's just dueling revs for fun

No I fight the easiest mission that makes me kill a boss in the same room with me from spawn.
