If you're a Dark Souls or Sekiro hardcore fan don't bother; you won't like Nioh. Unless you're open-minded enough to enjoy a game for what it is without comparing it to From's games.
Having the story span so many years in nioh 2 made the pace so fast is was hard to know what was even going on.
i loved story of nioh 1 despite what people say
i rage quit before coz date masamune and enemies getting harder in general frustrated me so much
ill do 1 then move to 2
i expect smoother gameplay from 2
I would at least play Nioh 1 once, so the main story and DLCs on the base difficulty and then go to Nioh 2. Pretty sure you can get it for around 15€ on third party sites. But even if you don't, Nioh 2 has over 100h worth of content on the first playthrough and then you still have 4 higher difficulties and Abyss so that's like another 200-500h, depends on how much you like it.
I'm in my first dlc of Nioh 2, and it's as addicting as the first game. I don't think it is fair to compare both games. I see both games as a single game.
As for the OP, Nioh2 got better gameplay but Nioh1 got better story.
You get Nioh 1 with Nioh 2 complete editions anyway so you got 2 games regardless.
Nioh 1 definitely does have a better story. I find that the combat is harder and you have to switch up stances and weapons a lot more and really think about how to approach some enemies. Some of the levels are annoying and lame but several of them are really iconic and fun. There are a lot more random difficulty spikes and frustrating traps.
Nioh 2 lets you create your own character which is pretty cool. The combat is fun but I do find that I can just stick to one stance and one weapon type and just use the same attacks over and over and win most fights easily. In general the game is a lot easier than Nioh 1, but there are still a few difficulty spikes here and there. I also find that the graphics aren't as impressive as Nioh 1, I think they might have downgraded the graphics a bit to improve performance.
sucks to see people compare it to souls though. it uses the same base concepts, but the gameplay is so different and has much more depth. going from replaying ds1 to replaying nioh 2 is a huge adjustment for me lmao.
The Nioh series is a third person, mission based, character-action, ARPG/Looter. If you ignore getting better gear you will find it hard, if you do not learn and understand all of the core mechanics you will find it hard and if you play it like a souls game, once again you will find it hard/cheap due to the speed of the game.
Nioh 1 does have some really bad gimmicky fights (yes I'm talking about the dual boss fights) and Nioh 2 fixes most of those issues by making bosses fights pretty fair while still being challenging.
Nioh 2 is a very complex (even compared to Nioh 1), ARPG that rewards you with learning the game mechanics and the customization if out of this world, when compared to other games. Nioh 2 is easily once of the best and most content rich ARPGs on the market. No other game has a combat system as deep, rewarding and customizable as Nioh 2 and I would argue that is a fact (even if you dislike the game). Also this game has some crazy fun build you can make if you get deep into the looter side of it.
If you like Nioh 1 you will love Nioh 2, and if you dislike the core mechanics of Nioh 1 you many still not like them in Nioh 2 to because it builds on everything the first game does. As you can tell, I regard this game really high and it is one of my favorites ARPG/looters.
I haven't played onimusha or ninjagaiden or diablos.
And yeah nioh 1 has alot of bs fights like date masamune always (on my first playthrough I didn't grind at all and date made me rage quit) or 1 v 2 fights
I'm playing nioh 1 rn and waiting for 2 to go on sale
This has real potential to be my top fav game
But for now money you get ingame is too low making reforging weapon special effects tedious to grind
