Tip: Caltrops are actually pretty good
Since shurikens seem useless, I decided to try the caltrops out and not only are they good for levelling ninjutsu but the slowness effect is very useful for splitting enemies - made it easy to do the Gozuki + Mezuki fight first try without breaking a sweat.

To me, shurikens are a ki-free way to interrupt an enemy caster or human enemy with lower toughness that is doing a basic attack. Preferably not high stance, since those are harder to interrupt.

Agreed on Caltrops being a delightfully annoying tool to deploy. A certain Iga ninja loves stepping on these and it has saved my sashimi more than once during my shinobi life.

Wait, what? Shuriken are great! I'm on NG+ and use them all the time with the infinite shuriken set. The set completely tanks their damage, but damage isn't their usage. They can quickly and easily interrupt from range, break guards with a few throws and build up a silly amount of anima with ease when using stuff like Anima Bonus (Ranged Hit).

im only on ng but the bombs do absolutely insane damage
cluster bombs one-shot kill bigger enemies like waira and one-eyed oni

also you can use the paralyze trap to split/crowd control enemies extremely effectively

Minor note on why Shuriken and Kunai are kinda broken:
If you fight, e.g. in chapter 4, against Saika from Nioh 1: Simply hit him with a single Shuriken or Kunai at the right moment while he is airborne. You'll knock him down for free and gain access to a long punish combo. It really trivializes the fight.

In my oppinion, Shuriken and Kunai were better in Nioh 1, but they are still really useful tools.

Also the good thing about them is that they will stagger any human enemy or boss the second they walk onto them, actually managed to save a knocked down host before by throwing some caltrops between him and the boss when he was trying to get up and heal.

The pinwheel and the debuff shuriken are great

shuriken aren't useless, and with a certain set bonus are actually quite useful

once you're in NG+ as well you can make weapons scale mainly off dex, which allows you to build for very strong ninjutsu alongside your main weapon
