I mean, when do other games get good once you played Nioh 2 ? 😂 This thing is freakin' awesome. No BS, just straight up awesome straight forward gameplay.

Immediat-- oh wait lol

Good to hear you're having a good time. It's a special game! Did you play the first one or did you jump straight into 2? It's very similar but 2 is better in my eyes!

No i haven't played the first. Coming from elden Ring i really had a hard time on the first mission. There is so much happening on the controller compared to Elden Ring. It's much faster also and you have less space to manoeuver. But once it clicks it's such a blast. Controls are so sharp compared to any Fromsoft games.

For me Nioh 2 still hasn't gotten good.

Other games get good because they have good pacing.

But Nioh 2 just gives you everything and throws you into copy paste missions with dozen half-baked ideas. Will I unlock new weapon? Ability? Game mechanic? Enemies? Area? Characters? No. It will just be the same. Again and again. Same weapons with same mechanics against generic human and demon enemies and human general #23 and demon #68 as bosses. And the combat is only fine if you compare it to Souls games but sad when compared to action games.

I agree with the reused levels. Nioh 2 get's every cents worth out of each level. But on my playthrough now I felt the pacing is pretty okay. Every main mission a new enemy type gets introduced, every Chapter you unlock new skills for your weapons and new tools with Onmyo and Ninjutsu and have a broader selection of Yokai abilities.

How far did you get in Nioh 2?

Id argue it feels that way because you get maybe 1 or 2 new or reused enemies from 1 every few hours, you’d have fought most by near half way through the narrative. As for unlocking skills that’s still gated behind the dojo on top of proficiency requirements. I like ninja combat what sucks on higher skills is that it because a Diablo loot grind which goes against the whole core combat system.

Somewhere after the cat lady.

Yes there are new enemy types but they don't really change the fights in any significant way. Hit hit hit ki, rt+b if white or red flash, hold block with mid stance. And it doesn't play like an action game where they throw a bunch of different enemies at you, the focus is in 1on1 like in Souls games. And when you pull multiple stronger enemies it just gets clowny.

And too many weapons/skills are just copy paste. Like almost every weapon has X+X+X+Y and Y+X. Then many have Y(hold) and rb+B(hold). Parries with same inputs. "hold direction during ki pulse to reposition". +30 ki while holding this weapon. +3% more damage. +10% less damage taken when low hp. +3% damage with grapples.

Different magic buffs that give you more damage but it's just the same just different element. Same with barriers. Speed scrolls, hazard immunity scrolls, stealth scrolls, don't make the combat any more varied. With throwables too you get shurikens and bombs which are essentially the same thing and all of those have different element variations too which again is just same function again and then you have kunais and coins which AGAIN ARE JUST THE SAME THING AGAIN.

For the weapons while inputs are simple doesn’t mean using them is the same, not every skill works the same way. Parries are pretty worthless as a whole. The cool thing about the combat system is mixing up the stances for maximum effect. As for magic can’t really provide input on what’s new but you can boil everything down to something simple. I do agree that the game reuses a lot of enemies, makes them being spongy in higher levels more annoying.

I agree. I wish there were more enemy types and levels. And the +3% damage and the other small % upgrades on the skill trees are boring and probably shouldn't take up the same space as the "exciting" new moves you can unlock.

But overall, most games boil down to a simple core gameplay loop. Press button to do thing. It's okay to expect more from a game, but it's what we got. The same way, I really love Nioh 2 but I can't seem to get any enjoyment out of Wo Long.

Sometimes a game just does not click :zazen:
