Lol, this is the funny thing about this game. I just blasted through the next main mission and beat Tokichiro after just a few tries and in a little under a minute. The variation in difficulty is just really striking.

But also yeah, I'd say Tokichiro and the next few are definitely easier than Shibata Katsuie.
They also don't do a very good job of easing you into the experience. You're fighting difficult Yokai in the first mission. You have entire skill trees given to you right away. You have to learn the burst counter in the first level and depending on which form you choose, the timing for that counter is different. Yokai abilities are another wrinkle you need to get used to very quickly. The game piles so much ♥♥♥♥ on you right away and it comes across as poorly designed because of it. The second main boss, Enenra, has environmental hazards, burst counters, Yokai realm limiting your ki regeneration speed, super high damage combos that are also fast, and fire AOE's. It's a lot.
Personally, I think Team Ninja should have had a few main missions that focused on introducing mechanics that players could practice (aside from the training grounds), and then slowly open up the variety of mechanics as the game progresses, but nope, it's all thrown at you basically instantly.
It's a game that I want to eventually beat at least once, but I deal with anxiety in real life and unfortunately, it also translates to video games where a ton of ♥♥♥♥ dumped on me so quickly kills my interest.
The game's definitely super worth it, so I hope you keep trying eventually.
Definitely true! For me, Tatarimokke is the classic "why on earth do people find this so hard?" boss. She's also my favorite boss in the game.
You also have tons of yokai abilities (choose Gozuki and one that can enchant your weapon with water). I don't remember the yokai ability of this boss, but also choose a yokai form that can counter them. If your thoughness is low, you can't block, etc. Being a dodge god is harder than being a block god.
