ok so what guardian spirit do i want or whatever
I've done a web search and they're all saying their Japanese names. Meanwhile I have the option of Wolf, Bird, and Dark Phantasm, so web search is zero help.

I chose Tonfas and Odachi as my 2 weapons.

Perhaps unlike many other players, my suggestion is the shark (phantom)
1 The phantom burst counter may need some practice, but it is the easiest to understand how it works. Also, it is the safest.
2 It has the highest capacity for soul cores among the 3.
3 200 HP bonus is extremely huge in early game.
4 With it, you can heal yourself by using yokai abilities, which sometimes will save your life.
5 Strong attack ki damage is actually useful in early game because you lack active skills and may need strong attacks to deal good ki damage.

you get them all eventually anyway, pick which yokai form you like the most

bird for feral
wolf for brute
shark for phantom

Sounds useful. Thank you. I will go with this!

That's good to know!

I kind of hate how a lot of these types of games (not saying Nioh 2 is guilty of this) often you choose some things in the beginning without knowing what they do or how they'll impact your game.

From what I can tell, you can change your appearance at any time.

Can you re-spec your character in this game, stats, weapons, and everything?

I know it has a HUGE learning curve. I've never played any Nioh game before.

Yeah you can reset your stats by buying and using the Book Of Reincarnation wich you can get from the hidden tea house or the blacksmith

as for your skills you can reset those for a price fee at the dojo any time
for weapons you can keep rerolling their blessings

This game is very forgiving when it comes to builds and you will eventually get everything in the end.

Good to know because the first big enemy with the spear just whupped me. I wish these games didn't drop your xp on death and were balanced around that.

if it makes you feel better, stats do not matter as much in the beginning compared to other souls or souls like games. respec is easy and new game should be to try out which weapon you like and what kind of set up you like as the real game does not start until the new game plus cycles.

I'd say Feral is by far the safest and easiest to counter with, both early game and DotW/DotN, as you simply dash into the attack with very forgiving timing and a heap of iframes. You can additionally use it to escape moments where you realize you've positioned poorly and are about to eat a non-burst grab that would kill you if you tried the same thing with Phantom. The fact that you take Ki damage from a mistimed Phantom that blocks an attack, while you can simply iframe straight through the attack with 0 Ki cost with a mistimed Feral is icing on the cake.

That's true, but it's several main story missions until we can unlock the ability to take advantage of that with the third Soul Core slot, and until then you're dealing with that x0.85 attack modifier.

I'm a huge fan of recommending Isonade for new players in Nioh 1 (Sense Enemies, Life, Life on Kill, Human CCD), but Kagewani is merely decent, with a highly questionable burst counter.
I went with the shark. Too many moves in the game to be messing with anything but attack, block, and dash. Only until I get comfortable with the systems anyway, then I'll start adding new moves.

I don't even remember how I transformed in the tutorial or what some of those RB things were.

While some are debatable I think, I'll admit for non-burst attacks feral is the best (while instead I will use a yokai ability in this situation. It cost more but can do some damage). The reason I think phantom is safer is that I've seen so many times that streamers just dashed into burst attacks will poor timing and got hit while using phantom at least most of the time you will not take damage. It's ok we have different opinions.
(For the capacity part, what I said is the initial capacity before you have the third slot.)
