then all I have to do is dodge
It's not cheap, you just refuse to learn combat. Do whatever is fun for you, even if it's cheesing your way through the game but I can't imagine it being satisfying in the long run. Doing parries, combos, using yokai burst properly. Now that's really rewarding.
When the game tries to limit me by forcing a mob that needs space on a small ledge over insta death, that's when the game stops being rewarding and I have to cheese.
Having the space to use my kit is when the game shines.
I just notice more of the cheap shots the further in I go.
It's just feels like a way to get a couple of cheap deaths out of me.
To put it plainly, encounters feel more like they'er put there to frustrate me, then challenge me.
It's designed to trip you over, overcoming it is part of the experience. It's difficult, odds are stacked against you in many encounters, and thats what is so cool about this game for me. You can get away from ANY situation if you react properly. I mean I recently played Ninja Gaiden for the first time and I think that game is fair even tho it's way more sadistic than Nioh.

Ok this is the only great rpg that is soul like, made with real fluid movement, real satisfying and, teres good progression on your custom character and tier lootables. But big issue atm, I cannot play with lock on and so, I feel I have wasted 74$ Make sure you can tolerate it before purchase and gl. All the fun I could have without the lock On feels huge. Rather not think or play the game, I will be back if I find a way around it. Even controller is not following your running direction, its on purpose meant to increase challenge without using rpg elements, very cheesy. Like dark souls. Not for everyone.
Never could pass first boss, lock on is stressing me and making me swet alot, I also keep dying to the first boss nights in nights out I had to stop this awsome gameplay. Looked for it in games for so long nioh has it all but its just killing me or starving my spirit so I cannot hit and if I surpass all those, well, I die because I am not calm enough to control lock on. What a shamefull thing to do to us, I guess darksoul games arnt the only one to punish players and in 2021 no one like thats. We want a niche game. gtfo Made me more sad then ever.
Nobody forces you to use the lock, you decide whether to activate it or not, but then you have the ability to hit the opponent, which apparently mentions here the fact that you could not even overcome the first boss let alone without lock.
This genre of games, the whole Nioh series is build-based, which is why there are many stats to replace in order to properly combine them, either by changing equipment or by rolling the stats by replacing them with suitable ones.
But criticizing a game because you don't even know what to do doesn't make sense.
Sounds like a man who gave up and let loose of his wits. Instead of practicing, improving and getting better he decided to write a negative review because getting used to the gameplay took too long. We've been honestly spoiled, hundreds of great games on sales and people expect to instantly mop every enemy, every boss on the first try. Everyone can draw if they train long enough, everyone can play a guitar if they train long enough, and everyone can beat Dark Souls, NIoh, Ninja Gaiden, Cuphead or whichever hard game is trending at the moment.
I find myself kiting more then anything.
And I don't feel much of a challenge to overcome.
Once you move the enemy from the room that the devs want you to fight in the challenge isn't really there.
Maybe I just haven't hit a wall to overcome yet
Yes paralising/poisoning an oponent isn't much of a challenge that I agree. Unless you mean fighting them melee and not strugging at all with any enemy nor any stage in the game. Doing that without practice, straigth away after purchasing a game sounds kind of frustrating I don't envy you, it doesn't seem fun if everything is super easy. You could try NInja Gaiden games, Sigma versions are on Steam. Those are difficult but for you it should be just a little afternoon challenge.
also if your build was that game breaking why not use light armor instead.
Sometimes in order to have fun you have got to practice... "Look at all these people shredding on an electric guitar" you might not enjoy initial learning process but have tremendous amount of fun after you gather enough experience to see results.
