How are you supposed to avoid grab attacks?
Title.
Not to be confused with burst attacks, which can be easily countered.
And not bosses, just common enemies, like nure onna.
The amount of time she bit my head off is embarrassing...
What i usually do is as soon as i see the wind up animation, i remove lock on and sprint away; cause my dodging doesn't seem to work like 90% of the time; but even that has very little window.

Oh yeah, you can also activate certain Soul Core abilities and the grab will fail, any of the ones where you turn into the enemy.

Some can actually be countered by burst counter (some grabs do have the red flash)
Others you need to dodge.
Some with launch/charge/jump and really good tracking are better to dodge roll through towards them, not dodge away.
But some can be just side step dodged easily.
It really depends on the specific move. Each has it's own timing and best dodge technique.
Also some Yokai Abilies can counter them Ippon/enki and others.

Most of the grab attacks, the enemy moves forward. I found that generally if you try to roll away from the enemy it does not help. What works best for me is dashing towards and past the enemy. Timing is still important, some enemies have pretty good tracking on their grabs so not dashing to early is important.

It is just bad mechanic in general. Grab attacks are generally supposed to be a way to counter blocking. Because grab attacks can't be blocked.

In Nioh 2 however they're just random moves that the enemies throws out which is going to delete 80% of your health or just kill you out-right. Some enemies clearly have defined grab scripting (as in they get most of their damage from grabs). So it's to be expected that they will try to grab and I am fine with those enemies. You just have to play cautiously.

But then there are some enemies which are not grab orientated enemeis and just randomly throw grabs out . There is no logic in it, it seems to be completely random. Maybe if they toned the damage down it would be tolerable. And only keep high damage grapples on enemies such as Nure-Onna which get most of their damage from grapples.

In most cases just don't try to pull out long combos when enemy still has Ki and you'll be ok.
Also be ready that some enemies love to grab when getting up from knock down/no ki state in dark realm (most enemies do some kind of cheap trick when getting Ki back in dark realm, either dodge away or if you want to continue preasure use Yokai ability to press on)

you can actually dodge the grapples but you have to remember the timings for each one because it differs depending on the monster. Nure Onna's grapple is deceptive. You need to dodge a bit later than you'd think.

For a lot of enemies it is just random. There's no logic behind their grab, you pressed a button and the game read the input and decided to throw a grab out. You can limit the amount of times you get grabbed by playing more elusively but there's no way to remove it happening completely.

enemy with no Ki can't grab or fight back for that matter, that is counter to everything in this game ;)

Try using a block counter?

Like with odachi you would hilt bash them.

Any move set that says interupts whatever may work.

Or quickly change stance quickly to low n roll backwards?

Nuri Onnas are among the most annoying enemies in the game, I spare no expense at picking them off with ranged attacks, or omnyo/ninjetsu as if they were a much bigger target. I have a hand cannon equipped for Nuri Onna head shots. Or I feather spam them/toss frags if I'm a ninja. I remember specifically that I didn't really use sloth talismans on misc mobs, but I did use them on Nuri Onnas.

Yea, both the grab timig and their paralizing stare have weird delay, the tails swipe too.
But when you burst counter them they almost always go down and are available for grapple, which mostly oneshots them.
They are designed to be annoying and they do their job well :)

If a mob has a grab attack with such impeccable tracking on it, to where if I dodge to the side 1/2 a second early, I still get grabbed, then I'm not going to even try to engage them straight up anymore. I'm gonna pick them off with ranged weapons and items/ninjetsu/spells. At some point you realize you have no answer for something except to just cheese it from range, or with items, etc, because they cheese you if you don't. After getting killed 8 or 10 times by something by mostly the same gimmicks, adapting is no longer about "learning timings" and is moreso about just cheesing them before they cheese you. That's Nioh 1 & 2 for you. That's just the way the game is designed.

Running or dodging past the enemy(no lock-on preferably) during "warning period" works well with most enemies. And afterwards you often have time to do a full combo from behind for massive damage.
Farsha Feb 22, 2021 @ 12:30pm
On higher difficulties you need to burst counter, grapple, final blow enemies to remove curses. So better start training it :D
