Can you get into detail if it was normal enemy, yokai, boss ...?
Also keep in mind that others with the skill to apply the effect on teammates can apply the buff to you without you noticing, had that happen when I took 0 damage from a move.
I haven't tried critical hp builds, so I can't say if Oyamatsumi bonus works for that.
Protection scales off of your damage resistances. If you're wearing light armor, you may take a chunk of the damage, but you may still end up taking damage.
If you were using the following:
Heavy Armor (or just physical resistance 20+)
Steel talisman / Increase Defense (Life Gain / Amrita Absorption) +
Devigorate / Reduce Attack (Ranged Hit / Onmyo Magic Hit) +
Protection
[Insertion Edit: Damage Taken should help as well such as Genbu guardian spirit, ethereal Lady Osakabe soul core maxed, set piece passives, etc.]
Should let the the user absorb one grab even on from a boss on Dream of the Nioh or Underworld. Onmyo Magic should only affect the duration of Steel or Protection, but not how much it absorbs.
Edit: Depending on the boss, even without the Devigorate effect, I've sometimes absorbed the whole grab and thinking about it from another player's perspective who haven't tried Heavy Armor + Steel + Protection Talisman, I would be highly suspicious too.
I haven't tried this with Empowered Onmyo Magic yet and am curious now.
That boss' grab is pure physical damage. A Protection Talisman (or the effect from the Uesugi clan) can completely negate that damage if the value is big enough and/or their defenses strong enough.
As I tried full heavy armor first, I was also quiet surprised. It makes a huge difference between light armor and heavy armor. At early stage you do not get one-hit-kills anymore, but later the difference is more visible.
