Mission recommended level
The point is: I want to beat the game faster so I'm doing mostly the main missions. Now I'm at the mission where the recommended level is 58, while my character level is 46. It seems like I'm doing decent damage to enemies, I even went through a huge area between the shrines and killed all the enemies without dying. Do I need to grind for more levels before the boss or should I do fine as I am? I'm playing with hatchets and abusing high stance hatchet throw, so I mostly don't get hit. I picked odachi as a second weapon, mostly because it has great damage and moveset.

I'm pretty sure the recommended level refers to gear level. I was under leveled until the 3rd region, if you are going to do any grinding wait until the 3rd region for the boss gauntlet and equip gear that gives you more xp and also pick every kodama you can find and use the amrita % boost.
You should be fine either way though, the game is only hard at the start (at least on Ng).

Then my gear is even more underleveled than me

You will get the recommended level gear in the level anyway. Don't worry about it if you are not struggling. If you constantly equip the best possible gear and have a good build you will breeze through this game anyway considering you've said you're going through the levels without dying which for a majority of levels is the hardest part

The recommend level should have a difficulty beneath it represented in swords.

If the mission is ranked at 1 sword, your gear and level are considered more than sufficient.

And that does indeed factor in your equipped gear.

The recommended level is just nonsense; ignore it. There shouldn't ever come a time where you *have* to grind. The mission difficulty is a better indicator of how challenging something is, but, even so, Nioh's difficulty raises very gradually, so if you've unlocked a mission I don't see why you wouldn't be able to beat it. The only notable exception are the blue online missions since they're usually quite a bit harder than other levels in their region.

I've struggled with the Owl boss a lot. And I didn't get any good weapons until after I beat the boss, lol. Still, can't complain. After I finally defeated it (with a summon of course, because no way would I be able to beat it alone ever), I got a nice pair of hatchets and an odachi, both much higher level than the ones I had.

Recommended level is the recommendation of your character level. The grave icon below it is the difficulty rating with your current gear setup. As you should already know, level won't mean much if your playing skill, gear, stats, or all of them combined, are bad.

In this case, if your damage output and defense are still capable, then don't be afraid to tackle the stage. Good luck.

Thanks. I'm at the mission with the "iceman" boss and my damage output sucks against him. I barely chip away at his health or his ki with my strongest attacks. He's relatively easy otherwise, but since the fight takes so long, I make mistakes and die. So I guess level and weapon level matter a lot for a below average player like me. Again, while clearing out the level, I didn't get any weapons better than my current ones.

That guy is very tanky, but is not hard. Try using the fire talismans against him
The yellow or white bomb items are also ranged and do a lot of damage, and some of it is fire based.
You can also use herbal medicines after your elixirs have run out

Thanks for your advice. I only have 1 herbal remedy though, so I make do with 8 elixirs. In any case, I finally beat him with hatchets today by using high stance throw as my main damage dealer (it's slow, but safe enough) in combination with fire talismans and sloth talismans for his dark realm phase. Without sloth he always killed me in dark realm with his crazy attack pattern. Oh yeah, and some gunpowder bombs which I used at the very end because I didn't want to risk spending ki on regular attacks.

Not sure I like it that this game requires magic/ninjutsu to deal actual damage. I always prefer pure melee.

You could also throw salt at him to quickly drain his Ki :steamsalty:
