I also think Nioh 2's story is not its strong suit. Without knowing Three Unifiers history, it can get pretty rough to follow and even with it, it's "oh, that's how they're going to explain it." Nioh 2 main mission wise is approximately 90% prequel, then 10% sequel. Though reading the character illustrations / biographies can help a little bit if you're reading in between missions or as things become available.
Mechanics wise, Nioh 2 offers a lot of quality of life adjustments that will coax along the gameplay compared to Nioh 1. If you were proficient with Nioh 1 gameplay, most of that knowledge and player skill transfers to Nioh 2. Whereas the reverse is not necessarily true, due to fewer weapons available in Nioh 1, weapons bouncing off of walls, and some other mechanics that is making this post more verbose.
Nioh 2 u run into ppl like.. Who the f are u.
The sad part is, I usually know most of them and the designs on a few of them were so different that I said, "Who... are you?"
Toshiie "I'm Mataza."
Me "Wait, did you always have an eyepatch?"
Hanbei "Hi."
Me "Yeah, you look like a Hanbei."
Me "Okay, this is Inubayama. So I'm expecting Koroku,"
Snyder's Aquaman+Turtle appears.
Me "What the F?"
Ootani looking fellow "What's up."
Me "Who are you?"
After someone else refers to him, "Hanbei wants to chat with you."
Me "Ohhhh!"
It's sad for me, because I recognized Fukushima immediately by that snow shovel helmet , but didn't even know Toshiie until scenarios later (mostly because I knew him by Inuchiyo and Toshiie and didn't even consider Matazaemon was Mataza).
